Moments of Joy

One of my happiest moments was achieving what I had been working toward for a long time: training vendors in my communities in business management and entrepreneurship. It required a lot of hard work and dedication, and the sense of accomplishment and pride I felt when I finally achieved it was unparalleled.

MARTIN EMBOLA MUAMBO EFOKOA, CAMEROON

The past two weeks have been a great moment of joy. I found a new job that I am excited to go into, which I feel especially fortunate about, considering the difficulty around finding jobs for people my age. Also, I am currently on a trip visiting the East Coast of Canada for the first time. This has also brought a lot of joy as I have not gone on vacation in some time due to various challenges that I have since then managed to overcome.

GUILHERME MARTINS, FONTHILL, ONTARIO

A Blessed 93rd Birthday: A Moment of Love, Family, and Gratitude: A priceless moment of love and blessings – my beloved father celebrating his 93rd birthday last week with my mother and their grandchildren. His life is our strength, his smile is our joy, and his prayers are our greatest treasure.

AMIN RAHMAN, BANGLADESH

Having received a very thoughtful card with birthday wishes from Barry! There are people that you meet once in life – stay in touch with – exchange messages – feel connected to, but never get a chance to meet again! These are people who are leaving a mark – sometimes without even realising it!

DR THOMAS H TREUTLER, SARASOTA, FLORIDA

I was blessed with another granddaughter, who will be named Olivia. My daughter announced her pregnancy for the second time, and we were filled with joy, emotion, and happiness. My life has gone through many changes over the past four years, beginning with the birth of Aurora, my first granddaughter, and now my second granddaughter. My life is full of purpose and motivation to keep striving and to give my very best for them, because grandchildren are even more than children themselves. The love is immense beyond comparison. I can only be grateful [translated from Portuguese]

EVERTON TAVARES, PIRENÓPOLIS, GOIÁS

The last night of a school residential trip, and my students decided that what they wanted more than watching a movie was to play cards and chat… they grabbed their blankets and pillows and hung out in the hotel common area, laughing and enjoying being human. The perfect end to a great experience.

ANDREW, BELGIUM

One of my favorite moments of joy is seeing a child realize that their ideas and voice matter. Sometimes it happens quietly — during a drawing, a story, or a creative project — when a child who was unsure of themselves suddenly becomes completely engaged and alive with curiosity. Working with children has taught me that joy is often found in those small moments of connection when they feel understood and begin believing they are capable of more than they imagined.

SHUBHAVI ARYA, OREGON, UNITED STATES

A recent moment of joy for me happened during a regular school day. I was walking past the playground after a long series of meetings, expecting the usual rush and noise — but instead, I saw students laughing uncontrollably as they helped each other during a game. No phones, no pressure, no competition for marks — just genuine happiness. I paused for a moment and realised that the loudest sound on our campus was not stress or pressure… it was laughter. And honestly, that felt like success.

DR NEETI TRIPATHI, BANGLADESH

My most recent moment of joy built up over a few weeks: I found a local Mexican market near my home that sells picanha. When I found out, I was determined to make it for myself on my birthday, which is exactly what I did. My moment of joy was after spending so much time prepping and grilling, as soon as I took that first bite, I was sent back to high school in Brazil and the joys of a home churrasco! I was so happy that I had found that familiar flavor and the memories it produced.

STEPHEN EDMONDSON, SAN FRANCISCO

Creating spaces for friends in my life – whether it’s coming together weekly to paint, eat cuñapes, and be our authentic selves – or picking up the phone and calling a friend who lives across the globe. My recent moments of joy come from these connections.

NICOLE, LA PAZ, BOLIVIA

Sometimes, a moment is the quiet culmination of years of effort, finally taking shape. During my recent holiday, I was able to hold the sample copy of my first novel. This was more than a moment of quiet joy. It was a moment of appreciation for a journey that, in its earliest stages, was filled with uncertainty and self-doubt, feelings that could easily have stopped me before I truly began. But they didn’t. And now, I can finally hold the tangible manifestation of a dream that became reality.

NANCY, GREECE

Driving to my place of work every morning through a tropical rainforest. Whether it’s raining, cloudy or glorious sunshine, I get to our world in such beauty.

MALCOLM, BORNEO

Flying a kite for the first time in my life this year! I am 53

NATHAN, BAHRAIN

My Moments of Joy Poem:

Ignoring grave dangers that freely abound,
A tiny insect boldly crosses my living room.
Teen daughter coaxes Mr Bug into a cup, & off the ground.
Places him on the lawn’s green grass, among red blooms.

I return home from work, depleted in ways only a teacher can be.
A million worries nibbling my brains, I pull open the front door.
Out bounds, towards me, a fluffy, white ball of energy.
In his molten-gold eyes, a love so sweet – I am tired no more!

Birthday message comes each year, like clockwork, on my day,
Lights up my face – never mind the wrinkles & the grey!
Gratitude fills my cup, in summer, spring, winter & fall.
A moment to pen these words is the sweetest joy of all.

THUTHI VARTAZARIAN, MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA

The sense of wonder and awe expressed by our children during a recent visit to the Zürich Zoo.

BARRY DEQUANNE, ZURICH

While talking with a colleague in the middle of campus yesterday, we both heard an unusual bird call, looked up, and saw two beautiful toucans flying overhead. It brought smiles to our faces.

CASEY ASATO, SANTA CRUZ, BOLIVIA

A recent moment of joy for me was returning to Bahrain last week. Bahrain is, and always will be, home to my heart. There was something deeply comforting about seeing familiar faces again — friends, colleagues, and the places that hold so many memories. Being back, felt emotional in the best way. It reminded me how powerful it is to reconnect with the people and places that make us feel grounded, grateful, and truly at peace.

SADAF KARIM, BAHRAIN

Completing a book centred on the deeply human tendency for people who spend their lives caring for others to quietly leave themselves for last has been a meaningful moment of joy for me. What has brought me particular happiness is the possibility that these reflections may encourage others to approach themselves with greater honesty, balance, and compassion, while opening thoughtful conversations about self-care and wellbeing.

FLEDSNERI SILVA, ATIBAIA, SÃO PAULO, BRASIL

Taking students out of their comfort zones provides opportunities for so much growth. Outdoor Ed activities such as mountain biking, caving, rafting, high ropes and orienteering provide experiences where they can gain teamwork, leadership, communication, collaboration, whilst being able to demonstrate resilience. So many moments of joy observed by being present with students over the week ❤️

TARA MERKS, MELBOURNE

This year, I started a new family tradition with my kids: having ice cream for breakfast to celebrate my birthday.

ANDREA MELLO, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL

Our family trip to Ayutthaya culminated in a morning of perfect stillness. Discussing our future, I watched the peace and contentment settle on my wife’s face, a moment of pure joy, where time felt like it had ceased to move.

TAJVIR SINGH, BANGKOK

The moment of joy for me lately is to be able to watch reality TV shows with my daughter, and we still bicker like when she was still very young. The simple things as well like being able to go out dinner with my wife and chat about life with my son.

FAIZUL ZAKARIA, MELBOURNE

Happening upon a previously undiscovered water play feature in a large public park and watching my 3-year-old rush in with abandon and complete disregard for the fact that he’s wearing his ‘good shoes’.

ELLEN, MELBOURNE

I made my own flower wreath for May 1st. It was a moment of joy making it

VIVIAN CHIONA, THE NETHERLANDS

At the end of a busy day, there’s nothing quite like our ‘debrief’ to provide perspective on the world, and a moment of uninterrupted joy.

GERARD, MELBOURNE

My moment of Joy was holding my new granddaughter for the First time on 1st April, when she was just 3 hours old. The miracle of Life she is perfect. To watch my daughter over the coming weeks grow in confidence as a first-time mum and the honour of being included in such a precious time filled me with such gratitude and love. A pure time of joy and the circle of life.

NATASHA, MARGTE, ENGLAND

There’s something magical about seeing the world through a child’s eyes. As my 7-year-old wandered the streets of Odense, he was captivated by the simple joy of following in the footsteps of Hans Christian Andersen. Every cobblestone was part of a story, every corner held a new adventure. He wasn’t just visiting this new place – he felt it, imagined it, and brought it to life. Watching his curiosity and wonder unfold is a powerful reminder that the simplest moments are the most meaningful.

SKYLER, DENMARK

A sunset at the beach.

ANA ANGÉLICA MARIANO, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL

Today I watched a room full of 10- and 11-year-olds do things I only learned as an adult. Our daughter graduates from primary school this summer. For the past 8 weeks, she’s been working on a project about animal rights in Swiss zoos. What they presented today genuinely surprised me. They opened with something that felt like a stage production—spoken word, rhythm, movement.
They recorded a podcast (in German). They created a children’s book to raise awareness for younger kids.
And they presented it all to a room full of adults. With a level of confidence that felt… completely natural. I only recently started figuring out podcast setups myself.
They learn it in school. At their age, I didn’t even know what proper sources were—let alone how to structure a presentation. And there they are: clear, confident, composed. It made me realise something: Their generation isn’t just different. In many ways, they’re already ahead. And maybe that’s exactly the point. Our role isn’t to shape them into who we are. It’s to give them a foundation strong enough so they can go further than we ever could. What impressed me most wasn’t just what they did. It was how they did it. Curious, engaged and natural. And maybe that’s what real progress looks like.

ALICE HAJJAR, LUZERN, SWITZERLAND

Out of sadness came happiness…Recently, I had a close friend unexpectedly pass away. This life-changing experience prompted me to reach out to a mutual friend. This friend was actually one of my best friends in high school. He and I had not spoken in nearly 30 years, but with one phone call, we chatted for the next half hour as if we had not skipped a beat. True friendship is never lost; we may grow apart in distance, but never our bond. I hung up the phone that day, experiencing joy.

ROGER DOUGLAS, LACEY WASHINGTON

My moments of joy come when I’m surfing. Out there, I feel like anything is possible!! I’m deeply connected to nature while completely disconnected from everything else. It helps me put things into perspective, slow down, and at the same time challenge myself. Surfing also nurtures a strong sense of gratitude for the ocean, because it’s always changing and never predictable. That picture is on my favorite surf spot in the South West of France and when people send me picture, that gives me even more joy :p

SOPHIE PECCAUD, NOVELLE-AQUITAINE, FRANCE

I try to focus on joy whenever I can. Everyday offers multiple opportunities for several gentle miracles. Today, a colleague learned I need dark chocolate as part of my wellness routine after lunch and she readily tossed me a small little bar of dark chocolate across a table where we were having a meeting. I also had two of my students come to my office during lunch – they asked if they could sit with me and have lunch with me, because I am a cool principal. I live each day with joyful gratitude

CAROLINA M., ONTARIO

Listening to my daughters having long conversations and making each other laugh!

SAROJINI BALKRISHNA, SIDNEY

My joy isn’t something that I’ve noticed recently, but have done so for some time…and that is as I have adult children, simply being with them both and their partners and chilling and being present while enjoying the moment brings immense joy…..as it does when a former student reaches out on social media to say hello and recalls something that happened when they were learning.

PETE, MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA

Our very happy puppy, Penny, who brings joy to our family at the end of the day!

STEVE, FLORIDA

Good health is something I truly appreciate. Everything else depends on it.

ONESMAS KIRATU, MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA

Gratitude for life and for the joy of being able to contemplate the vastness of nature, which reminds us of our true dimension and invites us, at every moment, to re-signify our existence on this extraordinary planet.

GISELE BATISTA, SANTA CATARINA, BRAZIL

My 21 year old living with an invisible (but very real) handicap getting ready for her first day at beautician school. I watch her sleeking her hair carefully after putting it in a bun. She catches my eye and says “yeah! to never giving up”. (For context: When she was 3, we were told she would probably not manage to go to school…). It’s a big moment of joy but it happened today, just I got Barry’s invitation to share.

MARCIA AYACABA, SWITZERLAND

Being around my almost 3-year-old twin toddlers. Their ability to see the world through curiosity, presence, and wonder pulls me into feeling joy and contentment

RANA KORDAHI, SYNDEY, AUSTRALIA

My moment of joy was playing in a fun tennis tournament at my local club in beautiful, cool, and sunny weather. My doubles partner and I wore matching outfits, and it was so fun to feel connected, part of a team, and I am sure it made us play better!

ANITA OZOLINS, PERTH, AUSTRALIA

One of my small moments of joy was watching my dog Alfonso sleeping peacefully on the couch, surrounded by his toys.

CLAUDIA PACHA, ARGENTINA

The movement sunshine makes when coupled with the swaying trees.

MARY, ANNAPOLIS, MD

A recent moment of joy was seeing my niece from London after a year apart. Watching her play on the beach, happily skipping down to the sea with her bucket, completely carefree, it was such a simple but special moment that made everything else fade away.

LAURA O’SULLIVAN, SYDNEY

Last October, I celebrated Mother’s Day in Rome with my daughter, a moment that filled me with pure joy.

CLAUDIA PACHA, ITALY

When I ride to school on my bike, I like to take a moment to stop at the lakeside, just breathe, and take it all in. Seeing Pilatus and Rigi towering above, gazing at the calm water in the Zugersee while the ducks swim past, and listening to the birds chirping is the best start to the day…..and a much needed moment to feel calm and focused before the hectic nature of the school day ensues. It’s definitely a highlight of getting to live and work in Switzerland.

JAIMA HOLLAND, ZUG, SWITZERLAND

Feeling myself improving in yoga and enjoying the sense of progress and balance.

FERNANDA, SÃO PAULO

YVONNE, MURWILLUMBAH, AUSTRALIA

Coaching collaboration of Grade 6 Theatre students on devising from performance poetry and witnessing their spontaneous wonder and anticipation as they engaged with resonating themes and feelings as a physical and verbal theatre experience.

JAMIE CANT, THE AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF BUCHAREST

These are the moments that stop time. My almost 4 year olds laughter filling the room as I tickle him. Time holds its breath. He wraps his arms around my neck and presses a big kiss into my cheek as I hold him close, overwhelmed by the quiet miracle of moments like these.

NATALIJA MAKSIMOVIC, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

I have moments of joy (and worry, and stress, and sadness) every day! My family and my two dogs, Pickle and Rocky, and my husband, Roger, make me truly happy. I have two wonderful kids, 10 and 11 years old, who make me smile and feel so proud—especially when I realize they are already much better than I am at being good humans!

JULIETA CORDOVERA, BOISE, IDAHO

In February, I had the opportunity to attend Carnival in Barranquilla, Colombia, and wanted to share a moment of joy I witnessed while watching the parades.

MICHAELA LUCEY, BARRANQUILLA, COLOMBIA

Running while hearing birds in the background, with that quiet sense of freedom.

SINEM, NEWBURY, UK

Still seeing a little reflection of my face on my older dog’s eyes. Although his eyes are starting to look hazy and my reflection waning, I know those reflections will stay in those eyes forever.

Waking up early while the city still sleeps. Watching the birds outside and seeing the quiet excitement in my cat’s eyes as a new day begins.

REBEKA, AUSTRIA

STEFAN

I was traveling and felt joy by the help and encouragement they out int helping me learn the local language.

ANONYMOUS

Waking up early on my birthday while it was raining, I went out into the rain and came back feeling calm, peaceful, and content with life. I saw the rain on my birthday as my greatest blessing and a special gift from the Lord, marking another year added to my life.

THOMAS ATTAH-BOATENG, ACCRA, GHANA

My joy…Taking time to quietly observe others doing what brings them joy. Sitting on the beach, I watched families playing in the water, surfers riding the waves, fishermen perched on the rocks, and friends strolling along the shore. Just being present, feeling the sand beneath my feet.

JASON COX, NEW ZEALAND

“Mom, don’t feel bad, we are proud of you,” was my daughter’s response to my ever-growing guilt trip about going to the library to study for my PhD. The next day, my six-year-old, who is missing his three front teeth, asked, “How’s your PhD?” and somehow pronounced “PhD” like an academic, a bit toothless, yes, but his inquiry and my daughter’s support meant the world to me.

DZENANAN CEMAN, VIENNA, AUSTRIA

Watching fox cubs come out in the evening glow in my mother’s back garden was wonderful. My children still talk about this on a daily basis.

JOHN WOODBERRY, RHIWBINA, WALES

I recently witnessed a small but profound moment of connection: an elderly man teaching a young child how to skip stones across a mirror-still lake. The child was initially frustrated, but with a gentle hand and a few encouraging words, they finally got a pebble to dance three times across the surface. The shared burst of laughter and the high-five that followed were pure, unfiltered joy. It was a beautiful reminder of how simple knowledge-sharing can bridge generations and create magic.

JP, BUENOS AIRES

Recently, I walked into an early years classroom. As principal, I know all the children, and they know me. One of them looked up, winked as a 4 year old can wink, pointed one finger at me and said, “I like you,” and I told him, “And I like you”. Biggest smiles all around. A joyful moment in the middle of a busy day.

CHRISTELLE LONEZ, LUANDA, ANGOLA

Gardening and seeing things grow

JULIE, GRAZ

A recent moment of joy was appreciating the playful humour and loving kindness of my Mum, whilst I stay in the UK with my folks (to step away from the conflict in UAE). This is the only teddy I kept from childhood – Peter Panda. Came home one day to this note to let me know the bedding and towels had been refreshed 🤗😊 …I told her if she plays her cards right I might give her 5* on Trip Advisor 🤣 It made me feel truly cared for and safe and gave me a smile in my heart ❤️

DENIECE WHELLER, RAS AL KHAIMAH

I attended a presentation at Gordonstoun School this afternoon where the Duke of Edinburgh presented a new royal banner to the Pipe Band. The look of joy on the young players’ faces when Prince Edward spoke to them was certainly a moment that I will remember! Just wonderful!

DR. ROBERT HORTON, MORAYSHIRE, SCOTLAND, UK

I recently noticed what simply was not available; therefore, impossible became possible now. I live near Boston and now American theaters play Japanese movies, offer concerts and J-pop could be easily streamed through Alexa. When I was growing up in Brazil, they were not available; so I remember memorizing the songs if possible. Hahaha. Time is going by fast and I am deeply appreciative that I am still with many people who were part of my personal history.

ANITA HAYASHI, BOSTON, USA

The smell of my morning coffee, when my daughter’s name appears on my phone’s caller ID, when my wife tells me she loves me, when a colleague made a special cake for my birthday because of my dietary restrictions, when my dog leaps into my lap of an evening, when I wake up sore after yesterday’s gym session… the destination doesn’t bring joy, it’s always the journey. Happiness is a choice, find it in every moment.

ALEC JIGGINS, PANAMA

A moment of joy I recently noticed was seeing a multilingual student gradually build confidence in expressing their ideas in English after a period of hesitation. There was a quiet sense of pride as their communication became more natural, supported by a calm and structured learning environment and the encouragement of their peers. It was a reminder of the value of steady progress in learning.

ALEX, SWITZERLAND

Finally seeing blue skies, flowers, and birds after a long winter.

SARAH, BUCHAREST, ROMANIA

Time shared with my wife in Italy enjoying the sites and her companionship.

SCOTT DEPOOTER, BAKU

The view from my window after my morning meditation and I open my eyes. Every day is unique. Seagulls, geese, or crows fly by. As do clouds. The light is always different. Today was quiet. No clouds. No birds. Just some smoke from a chimney. Peace.

KARIN HOLLEY, THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS

I feel blessed whenever I am by my mother’s side, with my family, and with my dogs. They recharge me every day by giving me love, strength, and courage, making my personal and professional journey lighter and stronger. They transform me into a better and happier person!

DENISE TURATI, BRASILIA, BRAZIL

Some of my greatest moments of joy come from spontaneous family outings, simply being out of the house, exploring, and enjoying each other’s company. I also cherish the quiet moments, like when my daughter wraps her arms around me so tightly I can hardly breathe and then drifts off to sleep. And I love our silly times, when we giggle uncontrollably, her laughter and happiness fill me with such pure joy. So simple, yet incredibly powerful.

ALEKSANDRA

I feel so blessed to have this year with Tiago; he brings me so much joy every day! My favorite moments are when he climbs into bed with me in the morning, my dog jumps in, and we share lots of snuggles before the day begins.

SUZANNE EVRA, BRASILIA

Life is a journey — an unforgettable one. On a quiet day in the desert, my daughter captured a moment that I will always carry with me. Through her eyes, I saw not just the landscape, but myself — reflected in light, warmth, and something deeply personal. There was a stillness in the air, a glow that felt almost unreal. It was a moment of pure closeness, of shared presence, where nothing else mattered. Just us, the light, and a quiet sense of happiness. These are the moments that stay — simple, yet full of meaning. A reminder that joy often lives in the smallest, most honest experiences.

ELENA AEBISCHER, SWITZERLAND

Watching videos and photos shared by a staff member with such excitement and pride, showing our Individualised Learning Support students learning to cut hair with a professional barber, and practising on our occupational therapist, who volunteered as the client. The focus and courage were unmistakable – even through a screen. A quiet, powerful moment of joy and dignity.

SEREN DAVIS, UGANDA

My moments of joy are the small, meaningful ones spent with my loved ones. They are found in simple conversations, laughter and togetherness. These moments may seem ordinary, but they hold the deepest happiness. They remind me of what truly matters in life.
Such memories stay with me and bring a sense of warmth and contentment.

PREM LATA SINGH, DUBAI, UAE

After a long week of teaching, the weekend should be a break—but watching Arsenal turns it into emotional drama 😅 With popcorn in hand, I go from relaxed to tense in minutes, while Manchester City make winning look routine under Pep Guardiola; still, even if Arsenal seem to “bottle it” again, I keep believing—because hope is part of the experience.

KENNETH OLALE, NAIROBI CITY, KENYA

One of my moments of joy is to ride gently through the streets of my city, Milan, in the hush of August. To follow the winding canals, the Navigli, feeling the evening breeze of late summer brush softly against my face, and to wander through the streets where I was born. To savor the sounds and scents of my city, to feel alive and at peace with the universe. The quiet, tender pleasure of summer’s stillness.

JOE DI DONNA, MILAN

With my eyes closed, on my living room couch, I listen to the sound of my breath as I try to slow down my thoughts. Suddenly, I hear birds singing outside, and they make me smile. I think: “Ohh, now I get why people like birds. Am I a bird person now?”

PATRICE, MOROCCO

A recent moment of joy was when a child I work with chose to come and sit close to me, simply seeking comfort and connection. In that small gesture, there was so much trust. It reminded me that creating a space where children feel safe is at the heart of what I do, and that these quiet moments are often the most meaningful🌸

VIOLETA, BAAR

Sitting next to a fellow educator at the dinner table during the ECIS conference, Love-Based Leadership, in beautiful Lisbon this week, and realizing that we’d worked together 15 years ago at a school in Taunton, UK.

VIORICA BARBU, ROMANIA

My moment of joy comes when I follow through on what I decide, despite distractions. Yesterday I planned a forest walk and a cold water dip, but didn’t go, and it stayed with me. Today I prepared lunch first, went to the gorge, took my cold dip, and simply watched people pass by. That made my day.

GAILE, SWITZERLAND

As spring unfolds, the emergence of fresh, vivid greens and a scattered chorus of birdsong across the forest is a reminder of life’s cycles. The stillness and closure of winter give way, inevitably, to regrowth, hope, and renewed possibility.

JAMES PENSTONE, NEAR TERVUREN, OUTSIDE BRUSSELS, BELGIUM

I just finished all the IB submissions (DP-2 & MYP-5) last Friday. Yesterday was Saturday morning and after a long time I was having a cup of tea sitting on a swing in my balcony while cherishing all the last few months’ moments. I enjoyed clicking pictures of each artwork of my students to be documented while recalling their idea development, the interactions that took place and the processes of making them. It’s such a great feeling of satisfaction to receive everything back I could give them!

STUTI VASAVADA, PUNE, INDIA

I am enjoying my moment of joy right now, spending my birthday with my lovely husband in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, in Rome.

IRINA CHIDOVA, ZUG, SWITZERLAND

As I read through the Moments of Joy, it was great to see the first person who hired me to work in mental health and addiction as a student, working at the Canadian Mental Health Association Sudbury. Dana Filrault gave me my start in my field while I was pursuing an education in Social Work. Who knew that job would lead me into this field and into working across Canada for over 30 years? I’m still at it and love my career.  I look at my career and my choices in life – personal, professional, mentally, spiritually, and socially – and I still go back to the time Dana took that chance to hire me to help facilitate a new program for people in need in Sudbury.

CLIFF MURPHY, COBOURG, TORONTO, CANADA

Sunny Saturday in Guangzhou: warm but not yet heavy, the city moving at an unhurried pace. I rode my bike with nowhere urgent to be, watching families, vendors, and parks settle into the day. For a moment, the world’s noise felt far away. I didn’t fix anything—I simply accompanied what was. 陪 (péi): to be present long enough to notice joy, and to carry that steadiness back into the fray.

JON ZURFLUH, GUANGZHOU, CHINA

This season has been marked by grief and suffering in ways I never imagined I could carry. Yet I hold tightly to the quiet moments of joy that keep me breathing—like when my son wakes up with the biggest, unfiltered smile and asks for his “Ah-Buh-Dee,” what he calls his blanket, his voice soft and full of innocence. In that moment, the weight lifts, the noise fades, and I remember what matters. My why is my children, and that will always outweigh my how—they are the reason I rise, even when everything in me feels like it’s falling apart.

SARAH BUNDY, ST LOUIS, MISSOURI

My recent moment of joy was trying the restaurant Jesus é Goês in Lisbon, which I’d recently seen recommended on the Netflix series Somebody Feed Phil. As well as the incredibly delicious food, it was so nice to meet humble, passionate, friendly people who just wanted to share their culture and give visitors a good time. Sharing it with the love of my life made it extra special.

MICHAEL, SWITZERLAND

My wife was away, so the kids were all mine. Dinner, bedtime stories, the endless excuses to stay up. Leo wanted a back massage and stories about my school days — he’s nervous about Grade 1. Maxine called from her room: Daaaaddy, come cuddle. When they finally slept, I sat quietly and thought: I need more evenings like this. I woke up with Maxine on my right, Leo on my left. Simple. Perfect. They won’t always want this. Time moves fast.

ASSAD, CHAM, CH

Drinking a coffee at a bar – cheaper than when you sit down for it – is a moment when I feel like I’ve really arrived in Lisbon. I’ve been coming here for 18 years, thanks to marrying into a Portuguese family. I’m always full of joy and energy getting an early morning toast and coffee at a breakfast spot. The hustle and bustle of a city waking up around me. The early morning sunshine coming in. The caffeine certainly strenthens the feeling, but I always feel joy and opportunity in that moment.

MARIJN BERGSMA, LISBON

Walking down the streets in Lisbon for the first time, it always brings me joy to discover new places and see human connections. Couples on their first dates, families together for a meal, individuals enjoying a quiet moment with a book, friends catching up on the joys in their lives. If you take a moment and look around, joy can be found even in the most smallest things.

WILL SAVILLE, UK

I’ve been noticing moments of joy for 26 years.  Joy is my youngest daughter’s name 🙂

BRETT WOUDENBERG, LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

After a cold and long winter, it was a real joy to have the first really sunny day in Ottawa, Canada.

KAWTAR, OTTAWA, CANADA

My daughter recently completed her first team marathon. Seeing her with a newly formed training buddy at the end of their section was truly beautiful. Proud Mum!

CASEY RANSON, BONN, GERMANY

Seeing the success of neurodiverse students who have been “let go” from their previous schools.

JACKIE DAIRE, BRUSSELS

Joy lives in the spark in students’ eyes when they feel seen and supported. Yesterday, I watched the smiles break across the faces of our students when I showed up, asking them about their projects and passions. My heart swelled with the honor of observing students discover their strengths, connecting with others, and taking pride in their growth; it was deeply moving. These moments remind us that joy in learning isn’t loud, it’s steady, meaningful, and built through trust, curiosity, and care.

MARY O’BRYON, TURKEY

Our librarian has created a vibrant community within his space. Students and teachers thrive there and it feels like an excellent and busy restaurant being in this space, all engaged, all focused and all content. It is a moment of joy walking through this space for me as an administrator.

VIKI STIEBERT, UWC MAASTRICHT

7 pm. Boarding pass… no seat. I get to the counter — overbooked. WHAT?! I have to be in Lisbon for the ECIS conference! Nothing to do, no space on the flight…
But hey! when life gives you chaos, smile anyway 🙂 The airline gave me a hotel, and this morning I got to see my two kids’ little faces through the window before heading to Lisbon. Good moments still show up, even when things don’t go as planned 🙂

ANGELICA, ITALIA

A recent moment of joy came from seeing a Comprehensive Sexuality Education project move from careful planning into real practice in a school taking this step for the first time. When an elementary school principal messaged to say, “We are actually doing this and it’s being supported by the community,” it felt like a quiet but significant moment of progress.

SUSIE MARCH

My eldest daughter’s eyes. I noticed a subtlety in how she looked at me, recognising a moment of learning after a relaxed conversation. This prompted me to reflect on how valuable these moments are in shaping families, values, routines, and relationships that establish the foundation for future adults who will bear the same responsibility of shaping the world to come.

MICHAEL CASCIANELLI, THE NETHERLANDS

At The Lisboan International School, music fills our outdoor spaces almost every day. This beautiful initiative, led by our School Nurse, Marta, brings an extra layer of joy to our community. The music is thoughtfully chosen to reflect what we are celebrating, whether it is a special day, a themed week or simply the joy of being together. Arriving at school to the sound of children playing, paired with uplifting music, is a daily reminder that I am exactly where I am meant to be 🙂

A quick haiku:
Wife and dogs are back.
Moments of joy in the park.
Spring has come at last.

LA

As challenges always arise, the positive work we do collectively makes me feel eager to get up in the morning and tackle the day. Now more than ever, administrators need to collaborate, sometimes disagree, get each other’s backs, and move forward with the school’s mission at the forefront. I’m looking forward to learning and sharing this week.

JEFFREY SHIRK, SALVADOR DE BAHIA, PASB

As people are walking onto our school campus, there is a spot where one can see a vista of mountains. That spot is outside my office window. Today again I am watching as students, teachers, and staff pause at that spot and take in the view. Some smile. Some take a deep breath. Everyone pauses and looks. It is such a pleasure to witness other people experience a moment of joy as they start their day.

TIM THOMAS, MUNICH, GERMANY

Spending time with my rescue dog who I adopted during the pandemic. To me, she represents all the best qualities about life, loyalty, kindness and unconditional love.

MS. LISA DORNAN, RESTON, VIRGINIA, USA

During the recent SGIS Conference hosted by ISZL, one moment of joy was when we were collaborative learning and discussions about how to support students intentionally. Another moment of joy I experienced was connecting with colleagues from the past who mentored or learned alongside me to be compassionate, well-informed, and highly-skilled educators. I was able to catch up with colleagues, some I hadn’t seen in almost 20 years!

KRYSTAL ROMLEWESKI, POINT EDWARD, ONTARIO

Football (soccer) was never a safe place for me growing up as a gay kid. And, to be honest, I’ve always loved to hate it. But my 6 year old son absolutely LOVES it! “Daddy! Will you take me to watch Sporting play with my friends?” Hard to say no to that! Watching him in his tribe, enjoying the pre-match antics, the match itself, and debriefing as we all left the stadium with his fellow 6-year-old football expert friends – it was a moment of pure joy I’ll never forget. (And it felt safe!)

ROBERT, LISBON, PORTUGAL

A week solo holiday without technology. Being in the world, not reading or seeing any news, reading books, speaking to strangers around me, and being awed by nature was a good way to spend a week.

JON SPRINGER, BRUSSELS, BELGIUM

In the Rabat Medina I came across this wonderful mosaic fountain. I find the mosaic 2-D art patterns to be incredibly unique and perfectly symmetrical throughout- just incredible craftsmanship by hand! Also, the outer inlay of green florals is stunning. The authenticity of this piece brought an abundance of appreciation and joy!

JOE KOTARSKI, RABAT, MOROCCO

I think it was a 2-for-1 deal. My wife took a break and sat in our garden in the sun to watch the birds (joy for her) and it was a moment of joy for me knowing how much she’d like it

JAMIE, UK

Seeing the names of so many friends here who have experienced joy, actually brings me joy. I think it’s called freudenfreud (the opposite of schadenfreude) or confelicity.

GRAEME SCOTT, EXETER, UK

An elderly woman, I didn’t know, held my hands in hers and began blessing me over and over again with the most sincere, heartfelt tone of voice simply because I asked if she needed help. The joy this memory brings me is indescribable. I still see and hear her voice, thinking about it.

Over the last 2 weeks, I was having a difficult time, but a moment of joy found me quietly, almost unexpectedly, in the soft arrival of spring. I noticed the flowers blooming—delicate, determined—like small reminders that life always finds a way back. The air felt warmer, gentler, and with it came a subtle shift, not just in the season but in people, too. You could sense it in passing smiles, in lighter conversations, in the way the city seemed to exhale after the cold. It made me pause, take it in, and feel a quiet kind of happiness: one that doesn’t ask for attention, but stays with you indefinitely.

BISMARCK MOURA, NEW YORK

Leaving school feeling I have genuinely made a positive impact on a child’s life!

DAVID, PORTUGAL

I hadn’t seen my cousin Jon in about a decade, as I had been teaching in China during all of Covid, and he’s been busy in recent years working in NYC as a teacher while his wife works for the FBI. They surprised the family and flew back to Minnesota from New York the night before Christmas this past holiday season, and we all got to see their first child – 4-month-old Kaplan! He couldn’t have been more adorable and it made for a special and memorable holiday for everyone.

DIANA ROSBERG, RIGA, LATVIA

A life-changing moment of joy. After working for 23 years at Graded, I have accepted the Orchestra Director position at the American School of Madrid. I’m truly excited about this new chapter, though leaving the Graded community is certainly bittersweet.

GUILHERME FARIA, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL

This morning brought me a few truly joyful moments.
As I was driving up to the Walterswil campus, just approaching the parking area, the view suddenly opened up—the campus framed by the forest, with cows grazing in the fields, all bathed in the soft morning sunlight. I found myself thinking: how incredibly lucky the children are to spend their days in such a beautiful setting, and how grateful I am to know they are part of it.

A second moment of joy was the photo shoot with “our” cow, Gertrude. With the real cows in the background watching from the hillside, it was a lovely moment. It reminded me how fortunate we are to take part in something both meaningful and fun for the school community.

Finally, after an energizing and thoughtful conversation with the ISZL team about the school’s charity initiatives, student engagement, and parent support, I left the campus feeling truly uplifted. These were warm, inspiring discussions and as I drove away, I felt a deep sense of gratitude—for this community, and for the life we are part of together.

Dear ISZL, thank you for fostering such a remarkable environment.

VESNA MÜLLER, BAAR, SWITZERLAND

Recently the weather has started to really warm up in Madrid and the park by my house is now full of people. My simple walks around the neighborhood or to the grocery store are now filled with children shrieking with joy on swing sets, hundreds of happy dogs, and friends and family enjoying each others company in the sunshine.

CASEY, MADRID, SPAIN

Over my birthday weekend I was able to spend time with my amazing family. My granddaughter makes me laugh and smile all the time. I am so lucky to live close to my children and their families.

DEBS STEHRENBERGER, LACHEN SCHWYZ

What brings me joy is waking up beside my five-year-old, already deep in our pirate adventure as we set sail from our bed. We laugh together fighting with our swords and tickling each other as the morning sun comes through the window, so bright you can feel its warmth on your skin. His smile stays with me, simple and real. Kisses and cuddles are always the perfect and most joyful way to start the day!

ELENA MORA, SPAIN

My greatest joy is to travel, preferably to the North, to see the countries of Norway, Finland, Denmark and Sweden. To get to know the nature, the animals, and the lifestyle of the people there. In the picture here, you can see the globe, the landmark of the North Cape, the northernmost point of Europe, above Honningsvag in Norway. From this point, you have a magnificent view over the mountain plateau and the sea. It was a great moment for me, to be able to stand there, in the midnight sun.

PETRA MATHYS, SYLT, NORTH FRISIAN ISLANDS/GERMANY

Living my best life, healthy and happy, is my joy. I am a cancer survivor, and I celebrate each day on this Earth.

Bridget McNamer, Aix en Provence

Today is my 75th birthday and the whole day is a moment of joy as I appreciate the perspective and experiences all these years have given. I am fortunate to share this moment with Miriam, my partner of 50 years, and our 2-year-old miniature schnauzer, Mocha, who has brought youthful puppy energy to our home. I am grateful to feel 35!

PAUL POORE, SOUTH FLORIDA

One day, I came home on my motorcycle. As I parked, my son came running, climbed onto the bike, looked at me, and smiled. In that moment, my heart filled with joy, and a sense of continuity touched my spirit—the feeling of being connected to ancestors from times long gone, and also to others yet to come in the future.

ALESSANDRO BASTOS, BADEN-WÜRTEMBERG, GERMANY

A suspended instant, as though I have stopped while the world keeps moving. I see the scene in panorama: my daughter, hair tossed back; my husband, eyes sparkling, laughing with her; the dog, eagerly taking in the atmosphere; the cats arriving, their curiosity piqued. A picanha sizzling, the pressure cooker shouting, folded laundry stacked to the ceiling, my birthday banner at the edge of my vision. And when I come back to myself seconds later, I feel I have just experienced pure joy.

EMILY DOBSON, PORTO ALEGRE, BRAZIL

Friday brought a truly wonderful moment of joy. I feel deeply privileged to spend time each week in the forest with around forty-four five-year-olds. That day, the sun was shining, and the air was warm, and at one point, I paused to take it all in: children scattered throughout our beautiful forest site, immersed in conversation, role play, painting, climbing, building, and running freely. It was a scene full of life and quiet magic. In that moment, I was reminded to savour these fleeting, special times—ones I am so grateful to witness and be part of.

A moment of joy: My niece flying her kite.

MARINA SKELTON, BAHIA, BRAZIL

This week I went back to the padel courts for the first time in ten months. I had been away because of an injury — and honestly, I wasn’t sure I was ready. I’m still not completely healed.
But I showed up anyway, and it felt great. I felt happy. In flow! Because my body remembered what it felt like to move in a way it loves. One class and I felt stronger than I had in months.
My moment of joy was feeling whole again, even if I’m not completely healed.

PRISCILLA PINHEIRO, PANAMÁ

Spring had just started here in Pittsburgh, PA, where half of the year is grey. I was taking a walk through the neighborhood with my seven year old daughter, my newborn son, my wife, and my dog. We were exploring and trying to see all of the new plants and flowers, and check their progress. The sky was blue and I was surrounded by colors. I watched my dog and my daughter run on the grass, watched my beautiful wife look at me with loving eyes, and was holding my newborn son tight in my arms.

FREDERICO CARNEIRO, PITTSBURGH, PA

The joy of creating together in the moment: listening, saying ‘yes , and,’ letting go of perfection, and discovering that there are no mistakes, only new possibilities. @UnscriptedNyon

JOHN MIKTON, NYON, SWITZERLAND

I live in Hanoi, next to a neighborhood lake. Last winter, for the 1st time ever in 25 years, I noticed a group of migratory birds making their winter stay at our lake! I thought they took a temporary rest before flying further south. But these 5 birds decided to stay the whole winter with us! Our neighborhood took delight watching them fishing and nesting in trees. In Feb 2026, they flew north. I do hope they will come back this year to our neighborhood and bring us more moments of joy.

HANNAH (HA DAU), HANOI, VIETNAM

Lately, I’ve felt a quiet sense of joy in my health — having the energy to move, think clearly, and go through the day without discomfort. It’s easy to overlook, but feeling physically and mentally well has brought a steady, grounding kind of happiness.

MARTIN USTER, BAAR, SWITZERLAND

The fact that I have started building relationships and maintaining them in 2026 brings me enormous joy 😊

ROGGERS MAYERO, KENYA, NAIROBI

We have recently conducted school trips for community engagement and team building for our middle school, and seeing the pure joy on students’ faces as they engage with each other in various contexts has given me joy as well. Those relationships, as they develop and build, help us to grow in our community, our wellbeing, our overall engagement, and in our partnerships with students, teachers, and parents.

JONATHAN ARMITAGE, LAGOS, NIGERIA

This past week, as my birthday approached, I found myself feeling really homesick. I kept thinking about our usual traditions: sitting together as a family, flipping through old photos, and listening to my parents share stories from my childhood. Because of that, I had decided not to do anything special this year. But last night, right at midnight, my parents and sisters surprised me with a video call. They decorated the living room, brought out a cake, and sang “Happy Birthday”, even pretending to feed me through the camera. For a moment, it truly felt like I was there with them. We ended up talking and laughing for over an hour, sharing memories and funny stories. I was left feeling incredibly grateful, reminded that even with the distance, my family can still make me feel right at home.

BLESSY MONICA

I felt joy when I see my daughters’ faces lit up when they see me. I felt joy when I see my son on the screen of my phone when he calls me on Whatsapp for my birthday. I felt privileged to be loved by so many.

SHIRLEY CHU, HOUSTON, TEXAS

Going to the nearby river with my sweetie and 6-year-old stepdaughter at dusk on my 30th birthday, swimming and dancing as the night swept over us. I felt so deeply connected and in love with both of them, so honored and privileged to get to spend my life with them and nurture our connection.

LUCA RADE, ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA

Joy, for me, was celebrating my 46th birthday here in Brasília, alongside friends and family. Interestingly, it all started with a simple question from my son, Davi. He said to me, “Dad, wouldn’t it be important to celebrate your day, since you always make a point of celebrating the lives of those you love?” In that moment, I realized he was absolutely right. In a way, I had forgotten to celebrate myself. It was an important reminder that we also need to value and take care of our own lives. So I decided to celebrate MY DAY, and it turned out to be truly special, surrounded by great friends and family, filled with good conversations, laughter, and the simple joy of being present. These are the moments that ultimately matter the most.

GUSTAVO JARA, BRAZIL

A recent moment of joy I noticed came from my new role at Sigma, teaching 4th- and 5th-grade students. During one of our classes, a student who is usually quite shy volunteered to speak in English for the first time! It was a simple sentence, but the confidence and pride on their face made it a very special moment.
It reminded me how meaningful these small steps are, both for the students and for us as educators.

THAÍS HELENA, BRASÍLIA, BRASIL

I was recently at a multicultural gathering of people in my hometown in southern Germany. Conversations were about overcoming challenges and celebrating successes. A six-year-old girl from Ukraine told me about her family, how she misses her grandparents, how her baby brother makes her laugh and she loves to hug him, sad thoughts she has, as well as her dream to become an equestrian acrobat. She revived in me a trust in the beauty of hope and of a growing sense of belonging.

SARAH KUPKE, SINDELFINGEN, GERMANY

My son recently skipped a year, jumping from 4th to 6th grade, and while it’s come with its fair share of challenges (he is an ADHD kid, after all), he is absolutely shining. So much so that he participated in his first MUN and even advanced to the next phase. Watching him grow into such an intelligent, inquisitive, naturally curious, and courageous young person has been one of my greatest joys. I often joke that you can take the boy out of EAB, but you can’t take EAB out of the boy… and I couldn’t be prouder.

ANDRÉA BORGES, BRAZIL

Kind of a cliché, but as an entrepreneur that works 24/7, 7 days a week, my moments of joy are with family (specially my parents – we enjoy them SO much more after our 40’s, right?), or at the park on the weekends after exercising laying on the grass listening to music (even if for only 20minutes) where my head is thinking of nothing, or trying not to think, lol. Now at 43, these small moments might last only a few minutes, but are priceless and revigorating. Time is much more valuable.

FERNANDA PARONETTO, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL

I was asked to share with a group of Grade 6 PYP students as part of their provocation at the start of their PYP Exhibition. I spent 1/2 hour sharing about a program I volunteer with, teaching Afghan girls online as they work towards attaining their GED High School Equivalency Diploma. It is such a rewarding experience, and it brought me so much joy to share this project with young students who may not know that girls in Afghanistan are forbidden from attending school.

I am grateful that every day I wake up able to give my wife a kiss and receive the warmest hug from my son. These are the simplest of pleasures, yet they are also the most heartwarming.

RASHAD SINOKROT, DUBAI

At the beginning of March, I was sitting at my desk, organizing my calendar, when the first signs of spring appeared outside. The sun was shining, and in the small pond by my window, a little bird landed and began to bathe. Water sparkled in the light as it joyfully splashed around. It was a calm, beautiful moment—one I keep coming back to whenever I look at that pond.

TANJA HOMEISTER, SWITZERLAND

I want to share something very special that happened to me recently: my son is going to make me a grandmother! We’re happy and anxious for the baby’s arrival. It’s a wonderful experience to receive this title of grandmother, and the arrival of a new family member is always a reason to celebrate. Our son has become a great, very responsible man, and he only brings me joy.

FÁTIMA SILVA, BRASILIA

This week, on my birthday, I was invited to watch the sunset, which I love, and it turned out to be the best present for me—deep and joyful.

I am a beekeeper and have had many losses over the winter in recent years. Of the former 11 populations, I only had 2 left before this winter, both rather weak. And so this spring I didn’t go to the beekeeping with the usual anticipation, but with the feeling that perhaps no bee can be found anymore. And lo and behold: I have rarely experienced a population so strongly in the spring, it was a great joy. Nature always surprises us with its power and splendor.

MICHAEL, BASEL

A moment of joy was this past weekend. We live by the beach, and on Sunday, we had breakfast together as a family, with laughter and the anticipation of going to the sea. The children prepared their surfboards with contagious enthusiasm. I went surfing with my sons while my wife waited for us on the sand. We spent hours among the waves, talking and laughing, fully present. Afterwards, she joined us for a lighthearted swim. Simple moments like these remind us where true joy lies.

RAFAEL KREBS, SANTA SANTA CATARINA, BRAZIL

This season has been marked by grief and suffering in ways I never imagined I could carry. Yet I hold tightly to the quiet moments of joy that keep me breathing—like when my son wakes up with the biggest, unfiltered smile and asks for his “Ah-Buh-Dee,” what he calls his blanket, his voice soft and full of innocence. In that moment, the weight lifts, the noise fades, and I remember what matters. My why is my children, and that will always outweigh my how—they are the reason I rise, even when everything in me feels like it’s falling apart.

SARAH, ST LOUIS, MISSOURI

A special highlight of my birthday today was my gorgeous nephew in the Middle East singing me “Happy Birthday” with such joy. Even in difficult times across the world, these simple connections remind us that happiness can still be shared with those we love. I feel incredibly grateful for these moments that bring us closer, no matter the distance.

DOLPHUS PEREIRA, MUMBAI, INDIA

As expats, it’s all too common to be away from or miss big events. This was a “big” birthday for me and coincided with needing to be in the UK for a race on 11th April. I’ve seen old school friends and peers turn 40 with surprise parties, lavish dinners, and fancy trips. In contrast, the opportunity to share my birthday with my family at home felt very low-key. I’ve been out of the UK for 13 years now. In that time, my sister had never met Dan, and I had missed most family events. So sitting around the kitchen table with my mum, dad, sister, and Dan with just a few cards and presents brought me (and them) a huge amount of joy. I usually find my “cup-filling” experiences in travel, exploration, and adventure, but in this case, just being home and sharing it with them couldn’t have been beaten.

HANNAH GIDDINS, ZUG, SWITZERLAND

Watching my 5th-grade daughter perform her heart out for our school’s talent show has brought me such inner happiness. She sang and played piano alongside 4 friends, and it was apparent how much fun they were having and how much effort they put into their craft.

JOHN SLACK, JEJU, KOREA

One unforgettable moment was when my wife and I surprised our daughters by taking them to see the new home we had just bought. They had no idea. Even though the house was completely empty, I had prepared the backyard with a fire pit and a tent for us. We spent the evening playing, telling stories, and roasting marshmallows. It was simple, special, and full of joy.

A moment of joy for me is watching my sons not only be brothers, but also truly best friends. They rely on each other, seek advice from one another, enjoy each other’s company, and laugh with and at each other. Seeing their relationship grow stronger as they step into adulthood brings me true joy.

STEVE, COVENTRY, UK

My husband and I were cooking, chatting, my younger son “helping” from his chair—when music drifted in. Not the radio. I walked over and found my older son at the piano… playing. Not just practising scales. Really playing. I realized in that quiet, unexpected moment, he had learned a whole new language. Now we get to share it. Feeling so grateful—for him, and for the quiet grandparents’ love that got him there.

ANDREA DIAZ STRANSKY, NORTH CAROLINA, USA

Laughter erupts as Indian spices meet an Italian grill. Children weave through the tavolata, dancing to Spanish rhythms and Greek beats. In this Swiss sunset, every shared plate is a joyous lesson; a symphony of tradition where the world feels like one big, vibrant family.

OLGA, ZURICH

Watching my children grow up so quickly and become more independent makes my heart feel both full and tender. With every passing day, I’m reminded how precious our time together truly is and how important it is to savor each moment. Our road trip last week from Washington, DC to Miami was one of those moments—filled with laughter, connection, and joy that I’ll hold onto for a long time.

IOANA WHEELER, WASHINGTON, DC

Saturday night it rained. Woke up and heard it steady on the ground and through the trees. Opened the window. The air was cool and smelled clean, like leaves and wet earth.
Could see the trees as black shapes against the clouds. Bushes and branches shaking slowly in the dark breeze. Just the rain and the wind working through them.
It felt good lying there. No need to get up early. Laid awake a while and listened. Fell back to sleep easy.

MIROSLAVA LIMA, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL

A few weeks ago, after our usual Saturday evening dinner out, my wife and I stepped outside and were greeted by perhaps the most stunning rainbow I’ve ever witnessed. Completely captivated, we spent the next twenty minutes driving through the neighborhood, both of us as excited as children, searching for the perfect vantage point to admire and photograph this breathtaking double rainbow. Even though our pictures couldn’t quite capture its beauty, the memory remains vivid and uplifting.

PETER EADIE, ORLANDO, FLORIDA

A little after 6 am on a warm summer morning, I am watching the sunrise on a lake nearby. The boaters aren’t out yet, it is quiet and calm, nature is just waking up. It’s serene, it’s the only time I voluntarily get out of bed this early. It’s my alone time to reflect, to be thankful for the life I have. I shut off the engine and just sit there for a few minutes, quietly appreciating this little moment of joy.

RICARDO REGO, INDIANAPOLIS, IN, US

Moments of joy are people, places, feelings, smiles, laughter and memories. The above sentiments were felt at the last family Easter gathering. As I sat back and watched the next generation in the family host and welcome a beautiful gathering just like our grandparents and parents did. Carrying on old traditions and making new ones. Our relatives in heaven are smiling to see the strong family bond continuing as the family grows .

CATALINA GARDESCU, ROMANIA

We had a birthday lunch yesterday in Avoca, a restaurant outside of Dublin. Across from our table sat a small boy, say 4 years old, whose eyes were full of wonder, looking at the chandeliers hanging from the restaurant’s ceilings. A lovely moment of innocent wonder and joy.

JAMES FITZSIMONS, DUBLIN, IRELAND

When my grandson, Ari, turned 8, I wanted to give him a birthday gift of experiences with his Bubbe that he would remember and carry with him for the rest of his life. We decided together that once a month, we would see a movie of his choosing at a local theatre. Sitting next to him in the darkened theatre, hearing the unbridled peal of his laughter and feeling a knowing nudge of his elbow as if to say, ‘Did you see that??’, connects us in those moments and imprints the memory in my heart with joy. Ari is already thinking about his 9th birthday and what we’ll decide to do together. While I don’t yet know what the ‘gift’ will be, I know it will be filled with many more moments of joy with Ari.

THAYANA BERNARDES, BRASÍLIA, BRASIL

Kutch is a dialogue between earth and sky. At Mandvi, the rhythmic Arabian Sea and the sight of handcrafted ships offered a timeless peace. Narayan Sarovar provided a deeper, spiritual stillness, acting as a mirror to the vast desert sky. The pinnacle, however, was the “Road to Heaven.” Driving through the blinding white salt crust of the Rann felt like floating through clouds. In that infinite, silent void, I found a pure, overwhelming joy—a rare moment of absolute clarity and awe.

DR. VRAJESH PARIKH, AHMEDABAD, GUJARAT, INDIA

One recent joy, as Alejandro’s father, was watching him train with determination after a difficult week. Even tired and under pressure from school and sport, he entered the pool focused and committed. What makes me proud is not only his performance, but his discipline, maturity, and ability to keep moving forward despite challenges. In those moments, I see not only the swimmer, but the young man he is becoming.

Hearing my favorite gospel song “You Are Good” played live at church on my birthday was a gift. It’s a song I hadn’t heard performed in over a decade. It shifted something in my spirit.

ESTHER CHOW, HONG KONG

Moments of joy… its actually come often…we can see it in the face of people to whom we tried to help.. when we try to do compassionate acts. Such occasions are when I try to help some students in his/her study, guiding someone in his/her career, being transparent and giving something more while dealing with clients, playing with grandchildren, trying to save small living beings from getting hurt, etc.

Moments of joy are for me sitting in my reading chair and trying to read my newest book. Unfortunately I am always distracted by the view😉

CORINNA SMITH, FIJI

These days I have been in awe with the growth of my 9 month old daughter who has been giving me the greatest joy of motherhood. Noticing her teeth starting to grow, her laughing at my silly faces or dances and her paying attention to her surroundings make me amazed at the works of biology and life itself. Every moment is wondrous, and I am very grateful I can experience this journey.

Standing on the shoreline, I felt a surge of pure joy as some golden sand finally emerged from beneath the clutter. My new European friends and I worked as a unified force, hauling away some plastic bottles, tangled cords, and weathered nets. Watching the group laugh and cheer while we cleared the beach, I realized the true triumph wasn’t just the cleaner beach, but the connection we built. In that moment, seeing our collective impact, I felt a profound sense of warmth and purpose.

In January, I was far from home, cycling through Thailand, when I received the news of my father’s death, aged 94, after a long, fulfilling life. The grief was quiet and deep. And yet there was also gratitude: for the way my family had arranged everything in my absence, lovingly and with such solidarity, so that we could say goodbye together. In the end, what remained – bright and clear – was a great joy: the joy of my family, my wife and our children, of their strength, their closeness to one another, and of how much love and life continue to be felt even in our farewell.

My moment of joy, which happened last month, was very special. I have been playing tennis for 21 years. Therefore, my brother, who is passionate about visual arts, and I decided to make a tennis film which involves 6 professional tennis players, coaches and rising stars. After two months of filmmaking, we presented it in front of the audience and I felt very proud of two things: We showed to the audience our Bulgarian tennis talents. We fulfilled a dream to make a film together

My moment of joy: Stepping into a Ngong forest in Nairobi on a Sunday morning, after a week that took everything from me. There’s a particular kind of silence in a forest not empty, but full. Wind finding its way through the trees. Birds calling without urgency. Air that smells like something real. I breathe it in, and for a moment, I remember what rest actually feels like.

WINNIE CHECHE, NAIROBI, KENYA

My moment of joy is my continuing education at ETH Zurich in the program Management & Sustainability of Air Transport Management.
It’s truly inspiring to learn under the guidance of Dr. Peter Wild, who was honored with ETH Zurich’s Golden Owl Award for this course.
For me, this experience is more than academic — it strengthens my commitment to fostering sustainable and high-quality management in the aviation industry.

MARTIN KELLERHALS, ZURICH, SWITZERLAND

My moment of joy is returning to my native home in Mangalore (India) and meeting my parents after a long year. The smiles on their faces, especially my mother’s, mean everything. She lovingly cooks all my favorite dishes, and the house fills with laughter when my brother and I are home together. These simple, heartfelt moments of family, love, and togetherness are what I cherish the most.

CHITRA SHETTY, INDIA

The other day I realized that sitting in my favorite corner of the sofa with my latest knitting project at hand brings me joy. I always knew that concentrating on the details of the pattern forced me to quiet the incessant background noise, while the repetitive motions of making one stitch after the other soothed the soul. But the moment you take a first good look at the thing you made with your own two hands, that’s pure joy.

BANU CHEDIEK, BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA

To be back at EAB for my 37th school year! Aug 2026

ADRIANA, BRASILIA

Took this photo, unaware of the heart, while I was beside the Charlottetown boardwalk. I stopped and was thinking of my mom. When I looked at the photo, I saw the heart.

DANA FILIATRAULT, CANADA

A very lucky sighting of the Aurora Borealis in Helsinki with a group of educators. There were 9 of us visiting schools there, and, against all odds, we were able to see it in one of the surrounding islands late in a cold night. It wasn’t much of an aurora, but the magic of the natural spectacle and the shared adventure of the group experience made for an unforgettable moment of joy, reminding us that even battle-hardened educators can connect with their inner child in the presence of beauty.

GABRIEL RSHAID

Being present for the birth of my grandson was the greatest gift my daughter could have given me. I discovered a love for him like no other, I’m blessed to be him Mamie!

LINDA BEAULIEU, CHELMSFORD, CANADA

Real growth is quiet. It happens when students face uncertainty, think independently, and choose to stay engaged. After 15 years of teaching, I’ve learned that motivation is contagious—and resilience is built in rooms like this. These are the experiences students carry forward, long after results are forgotten. [Context: second stage of selection for the International Business and Finance Olympiad for Romania.]

ALEXANDRA DACHE, BUCHAREST, ROMANIA

I had been looking forward to spring break to relax and enjoy precious times with friends and family—and that’s exactly what my moments of joy were! I spent 5 beautiful days at the beach soaking up the sun, sand, and sea. I’m so grateful for that time away from the daily hustle and bustle.

PRIYANKA JETHANI, PLAYA CARACOL, PANAMA

Watching my 15-year-old daughter power through a huge mural for her French class, with her music and headphones, in her zone, as the spring breeze flows in the windows. Then seeing her go back to it, slowly and steadily over months. Now the mural is nearly finalised and I am proud and happy in her happiness. Watching those moments and sharing the conversations with her continue to bring me great joy.

BLESSY SAVU, INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF BUCHAREST, ROMANIA

Here is a picture of embracing my dear friend Lindsie Boykin, after her magnificent keynote.

KATHLEEN NAGLEE, MÄRJAMAA, ESTONIA

Today, my son and I are biking around a little section of Lake Garda. That’s my joy!

IAN SIMPSON, STONEHAVEN, UNITED KINGDOM

We had not been together for a year, so this photo of Danya, Eden, and me, taken in the Isle of Man 2 years ago, meant a lot.

JAN RAGAB, ISLE OF MAN

A true moment of joy was when I recently watched my two boys play table tennis in their finals. Seeing how much dedication and efforts they poured into the game, and seeing the happiness and pride on their faces, made me incredibly proud and happy.

MARIA HELGESSON, STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN

My moment of random joy to share with you – I always have a moment of delight when I see a car inside!! 💜

RITA BATESON, IRELAND

Retired now and have lots of spare time. Spending time with my little dog gives me many moments of joy. We go on three walks every day and love seeing the ways he enjoys his world. Helps me appreciate the good things in life at a time when many places in the world do not have it so good.

MICK, AUSTRALIA

Skiing in one of the worst seasons on historical record for snow in Colorado. While conditions were far from perfect, it still brought me such joy to be in the company of others determined to get out there and enjoy the beauty of the mountain landscape. The upside of a poor winter was also that it was warm enough to ski without a jacket! It was St Patrick’s Day and the whole mountain was festive with people streaming out of bars in the afternoon, someone was even skiing in a leprechaun suit.

PURNIMA ANAND

Recently I was returning back home after being away for work reasons. On my way home my 24 year old son texted me and asked me to save some time to share a bike ride. That was my moment of joy.

MARIANO, BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA

It’s finally starting to feel like spring here in Qingdao, China! Some days are still pretty grey, but today I saw the first cherry blossoms of the season, and it just felt like such a little moment of joy.

POLLY COLONA RANDOLPH, QINGDAO, CHINA

My mother turned 80 on Tuesday and I was blessed to have her and my father visit us on a beach in Tobago. There are 5 sting rays that live at this beach, and within 60 seconds of leading my mother into the water to see them, one gave her a proper Ray hug, giving her a first, even at 80.

CHAD SCHWABEROW, CASTARA BEACH, TOBAGO

A moment of joy is simply having my family together; healthy, happy, and sharing a meal. With teenage sons and elderly parents, these moments feel especially precious. As a bilingual family, we honour our roots while giving our children wings. Celebrating my mum’s 80th birthday and Christmas together reminded me how important it is to stay connected across generations.

AGOTA JOINSON, SWITZERLAND

Despite anticipating deep grief in saying goodbye to my beloved George (loyal companion of 12 years), he showed me so beautifully that joy in presence is all around. With the sun setting in our last day, he helped me to be (not thinking about what was coming or what had been) & watch the birds coming to our feeder. Right in our backyard we saw so much life & by being in the moment, I was gifted with joy (& gratitude). I took this photo as a visual reminder of the joy when being present.

JENNIFER, AUSTIN, TEXAS

There is a specific kind of joy that comes from seeing the ripple effect of kindness. During a distribution drive in Kangemi, I met this young girl. She was collecting supplies for her sister, who was working as a manual laborer to help their mother.
Hearing her say, “This will mean a lot to my sister and mum,” was a breakthrough. It transformed “giving” into a deep connection. The joy I felt was the pure happiness of knowing a small gesture can provide peace to an entire family.

TERRI NTHANGA, KENYA

When I got my new job after months of being unemployed

MASSIMO, PORTO, PORTUGAL

Following an award assembly, an eighth-grade student who achieved on a roll certification for the first time came up to me and said, “Thank you for your soft touch style for helping me be better”.

DEREK HARWELL, VIETNAM

My daughter Juliette struggled at school, and her learning challenges made the IB Diploma seem out of reach. She was overjoyed to earn 28 points. Last night she called with her university dissertation results: “Dad, I got a high first and I’m on track for a First Class degree this summer.” I felt immense pride, knowing the effort and tears behind her success. Her smile on that call filled me with joy and reminded me how far she’s come.

DAVID WILLOWS

To bring some joy to our community, we leaned into the spirit of April Fools’ Day with an urgent announcement: we retired our beloved mascot, Vampy, for ‘Gallopy’, a suspiciously budget-friendly plastic horse. A deadpan cameo from our Board Chair kept everyone guessing until the punchline landed. The reaction was fantastic! One parent shared: ‘I honestly thought the school had lost its mind! This is a brilliant video and made me laugh out loud. A wonderful start to my morning!’

RACHEL CALDWELL, AIS BUCHAREST

As the darkening skies were blanketed with rain and gloom, and the depressing cold winds blew, as I stood on the Millennium Bridge, the sparkle of sunlight shone and gave me a feeling of brightness and energy. The skies turned blue, the clouds dispersed, the sun shone brightly, and the temperature, still but low, felt more like the warmth of a loved one hugging you. This small but enlighttening feeling, took my feet on and my heart beat with enthusiasm, the venture walk around London began.

FRANCIS, LONDON, UK & GUANGZHOU, CHINA

It’s spring. It’s raining. The worms are out. How silly they are and how intrepid. A walk home becomes an effort of dodging some and saving others– either way, getting and giving along the way.

EMILY, SOFIA, BULGARIA

At a faculty Art show at our school (AS Milan) my wife hung about 50 of her handmade, thematic COVID masks (which I wore at the front gate in 2020-21). Seeing these colorful, memorable and beautiful masks was great. Seeing kids–now 5 years older–remembering the masks and the moments was pretty priceless

WAYNE RUTHERFORD, MILAN, ITALY

I have noticed so many moments of joy recently – not sure if life is getting better or I am just more aware of what is special: sharing a training session in the gym with my husband, the beautiful pink and indigo sunset outside our kitchen window, and an enthusiastic hug with “I love you, Nana!” from my 4 year old grand daughter. Each different but each touching me deeply.

FARADAY, MADRID

As a school librarian I have moments of joy every morning when students rush into the library before school to borrow books or ask for suggestions of what to read next. Or to just hang around a place where there a books and book-type people. It sets me up for a happy day, no matter what else happens during the school day I can keep those moments in my mind.

NADINE, DUBAI

My moment of joy I have recently noticed is the mere fact I am alive, and I’ve been blessed to achieve what I have done in my life for more than three decades. It’s that simple reminder in life that you are never alone and being kind to yourself and to others goes a long way.

LOVE ANNE, NEW ZEALAND

Anytime I can spend quality time with my wife and children. Family first, always.

WAYNE, KAMLOOPS, BC, CANADA

I am a huge fan of laughing until your stomach hurts. There’s absolutely nothing more joyful than laughing that much with my children over silly things. It keeps getting better as they get older. That’s what I live for.

VALMIR GOMES, BRASÍLIA, BRAZIL

Just before taking off from the SGIS 2026 conference, the people I hoped to see – Barry, Maria, and Mel (and her sweet dog) – converged in the hall and gave me a heartfelt send-off! The moment embodied how meaningful work can lead to meaningful/authentic human connection. This sort of meaning is joyful!

HOMA TAVANGAR, VILLANOVA, PENNSYLVANIA, USA

This year feels especially meaningful for me, filled with joy and new beginnings. I’ll soon be stepping into a new role at school, while also closing an important chapter in my journey as I guide my first IB cohort through their IB DP Visual Arts exhibition. Alongside this, I’m incredibly grateful for my family’s health and for having a new house to call our own.

DIANA BRACARENSE, BRASÍLIA, BRAZIL

My father suffered a stroke on October 25 and lost the mobility of his right side. On my birthday, using all his strength and determination, he stood 3 times with a stand aid. This was a moment of joy.

JOANNA MOON, UK (with parents)

Surrounded by a symphony of bird song, wind, and waves, I walked the flowered ridge of the Tomales Point Trail in the Point Reyes National Seashore and admired the gaze of a set of Tule Elk who were snuggled in a bed of spring freshness. Grey whales paused their migration to slap their tails while sea lions hunted in the surf. The world stood still. I breathed deeply under the afternoon glow.

DARLENE OEHLKE, POINT REYES NATIONAL SEASHORE, CALIFORNIA

For me, every moment I am living peacefully is a moment of Joy and gratitude…right from getting up from my bed early morning, when I see the bright sunlight, is a moment of joy when I see my daughters beautiful face sleeping next to me is ..outside my kitchen balcony a crow comes and calles me out for food is a moment of joy, on my terrace so many birds waiting in queue to fed, fearlessly is moment of Joy..when I water my plants, feed a stray cat is moment of joy…and the list is endless🙏

DR. RITU NASRI, DELHI

New growth as spring emerges, flowers pop through the dirt, and early buds appear on bare branches. It’s a reminder that a season of death and hibernation reemerges with fresh newness and hope.

JACKI, MINNESOTA

A moment of joy in my life is when I look at everything I’ve built, my family, my child growing up, my career evolving, and realize that even with pressure, responsibility, and chaos, I keep moving forward. It’s not about perfection, it’s about knowing I’m in control of my path and building something greater every day.

BRUNO, SANTO ANDRÉ

There are always many repeating experiences of joy, light rain, early morning sun or the fresh snow. But this year I became a grandparent for the first time, and there are many firsts. First seeing my own child hold their baby will forever be my greatest joy. This year has held many joyful firsts. A real smile, a first laugh, first time for little arms reaching for me. It has been a year of many joyful firsts.

MARCUS WAGNER, AUGSBURG

A small but genuine moment of joy was listening to a favourite song unexpectedly and realizing how something so simple can instantly lift your mood.

ADITYA PUNIA, INDIA

Waking up next to my 1-year-old daughter and seeing her smile and her eyes light up when she sees mommy next to her is one of my greatest joys each day.

JENNIFER DOUGLAS, TEXAS, UNITED STATES

One of my moments of joy was during the student-led Impact Lab on ‘Avalanche Safety: A Crash Course’. The students presented an informative and engaging session, and I found myself at a table with Brian and Jennifer Bissell. I loved observing the interactions between the generations. A beautiful moment where the older generation was learning from the younger one with genuine interest. We are never too old to learn, and sometimes our young people are our best teachers.

VALÉRIE BESANCENEY, GRYON, SWITZERLAND

Something that brought me joy yesterday was the following… I lent out some highlighters during an afternoon lesson, and some students forgot to hand these back. The next morning, I asked them if anyone had packed them away by mistake, but no one thought they had. Later on, I found a highlighter in my pigeon hole in the school office with a post-it note telling me it had been found in another student‘s pencil case, as if it was a great mystery that had been solved. Teenagers can be so adorable! This made me smile and the post-it made it onto my daily gratefulness list in the evening, so my husband also got joy from the story too!

CATHERINE SANDWELL-MEYER, AARGAU, SWITZERLAND

As a relatively new father (kids are both under 10), I am finding this is the sweet spot for moments of joy. It might be a new word I have never heard them use before, or asking a question I thought was beyond their understanding, watching my son learn how to flip an egg for the first time, and watching my daughter solve a puzzle she’s struggled with are small examples, but they all add up. The emotional swings of parenthood are intense, but they are filled with joy.

KEN FORDE, ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA

A feeling of greatness in my soul, a teardrop rolling down my face, happiness and gratefulness for the meaning of life, I read a message of a mother celebrating, her growing son visiting a museum with her,
What a gift, a blessing, in the mist of so much sadness and violence in the world.

I am so proud of my daughters. They love the arts as much as I do, and it brings me so much joy to share experiences such as the musicals all together. Last night’s Middle school musical ‘Annie’ was wonderful! Honestly, the school musicals give us all so much happiness and a real sense of belonging at ISZL. I love every opportunity that ISZL has given me, volunteering, and being able to share these experiences with my daughters together. Such joy!

JENNY, LUZERN

When I came home late after attending a conference, I found a note from my 12-year-old daughter. She asked if I wanted to sleep over in her room with little boxes I could check for my answer. The options were ‘yes’ or ‘of course’. My answer was ‘of course’ so I got to wake up with her in the morning and snuggle a bit before getting ready for school and work. What better start of the day could you have?

HEDY, THE NETHERLANDS

Celebrating three years in Canada fills me with deep joy and gratitude. When I first arrived, fear and uncertainty weighed heavily, but pushing through those doubts became my most rewarding growth. Adjusting to a new country and workplace demanded resilience, yet those challenges shaped my journey. Today, my greatest happiness comes from health, safety, and living fear‑free with my family in this new home.

MIRZA, LONDON, CANADA

A recent moment of joy that has stayed with me came when my son decided that it was time for his training wheels to come off his bike. There was no long build-up, just a quiet determination and a willingness to try. After only a couple of wobbly attempts, he found his balance and began to pedal on his own, circling the playground with the widest, most radiant smile. It reminded me how growth often arrives in small, brave decisions and how the simplest milestones can hold the greatest joy.

BROOK, SWITZERLAND

One recent moment of joy for me came after a mock exam, when a student chose to step back from gaining a borderline mark that would have improved her overall grade, after reflecting on how it might affect her brother, who is in the same year and had worked incredibly hard but not achieved that same outcome. Seeing her prioritise kindness and perspective over the result (which is very important to her) was quietly powerful. It was a lovely reminder that students are developing not just academically, but also as people.

KETEVAN NIZHARADZE, LONDON

One particular moment of joy was realizing that the organisms in the aquarium that my son has left behind while studying at university, are managing to thrive. Recently the elusive amano shrimp was sighted and they are important cleaners! Caring for what is dear to a child far from home is most heart warming.

DEMETER, SWITZERLAND

My grown children are all living their adult lives, my moment of joy, when they call me just to say hello. They still need their mother!

DEBBIE, GERMANY

A moment of joy for me is sharing quality time with my family when we’re together. With my parents now living by the beach and everyone in different cities, these moments feel even more special; they remind me of our family values, genuine affection, and a true sense of connection. In those times, my mom always reminds us to be grateful for our lives every day and to show appreciation for those around us.

SABRINA STEYER, BRAZIL

Conferences are about people coming together and communicating “In Real Life”. I recently had the privilege of organising the exhibition at the SGIS conference at ISZL. As an event organiser, a moment of calm and quiet is joyful. My moment of joy was to escape the conference hubbub for fifteen minutes and sit in a pew of a chapel on a rainy Saturday morning. The beautiful, historic chapel at the Zug campus of ISZL provided a moment of joyful calm, quiet, and contemplative solitude.

STEVEN JAMES, ISZL, ZUG CAMPUS

Life in Cuba is hard; our school faces crisis after crisis. Yet this Saturday, at Family Fun Day, salsa played from a battery-powered speaker as children ran, laughed, and chased bubbles – no wifi, no devices, no problem. A father told me, “Today, my daughter forgot she was leaving ISH – thank you.” That was enough. That was everything.

CHRIS, CUBA

Watching students share their learning with their parents and peers during the Primary School Learning Showcase. I was full of joy, and pride, watching and listening to the Students share their knowledge and enjoyment, especially when they made some others squeamish during their explanation of heart dissection.

JONATHAN BAILEY, LA GARENNE SCHOOL

My moments of joy of late have been watching the trees blossom. After what has felt like a long winter, Spring has arrived in West London!

SARA KHAN, RICHMOND, UK

My family and I recently moved to a small ranch near my school. We are surrounded by green spaces, fresh air, and a sense of peace that slows us down in the best possible way. We are enjoying the still mornings, the comfort of coming home to nature after a full day, the simple moments we share together, and the feeling that this place gives us room to breathe, rest, and truly enjoy one another.

TIAGO CUNHA, VINHEDO, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL

The moment of joy I’ve noticed recently is the beautiful smile each person carries. Every smile is unique and precious, an expression that comes from deep within. Sometimes it takes months to see a smile, and when it finally appears, it brings a deep sense of gratitude and relief, a quiet reassurance that things will be okay. As I grow older, I’m reminded that even the simplest smiles should never be taken for granted.

JUDY PARK, KOREA

A moment of joy I have noticed recently is watching my son engage with our dogs more intimately. I’ve skimmed some literature and have heard in passing conversation how pets can really help children develop empathy, care, and compassion for others. Watching my son share moments of joy and show care to our dogs is enough evidence for me to believe this.

Waiting in the parking lot to pick up my wife from her day of subbing at my old school, as school let out, a former student of mine saw me and ran over with a very excited “Hey, Kru Paul”, then suddenly another with a similar greeting, and then another. Then the fourth showed, and he noticed I was wearing my “big bike” clothes and had my helmet in hand – he then talked to me about getting his own bike. A really joyful, impromptu reunion with some great prior students – brings a smile to an old face!

PRADEEP GOWTHAMAN, SHANGHAI, CHINA

It was recently my birthday but at the same time having to say my final goodbyes to my grandfather, who I loved with every bit of me. But even in this moment of heartbreak, my family came together as we do in every happy and sad moment, and we sang, danced, and laughed till tears rolled down our faces and in all that chaos, I knew how loved and blessed I am, I walk through life with these people.

NOLITHA, JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

The moment I wake up and appreciate the beautiful gift of life for another day

MAGDALEN GRAY, BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

After an intense weekend of work, my moment of joy was rediscovering the power of the pause. Yesterday, sharing a quiet coffee with my wife in a hidden corner of Hanoi, the world just stopped. We talked about everything except work—dreaming about the future, laughing at the little things, and simply reflecting on our life projects together. It was a beautiful reminder that joy isn’t always in the finish line, but in the person walking beside you.

ANDRES RODRIGUEZ PERDOMO, HANOI, VIETNAM

I have survived 2 cancers, last one just 1 year ago, but last fall the scans showed something on my liver and this threw me again in panic and dispare. The scans 10 days ago showed completely clean scans and that gave me an immense JOY! I then realized that the joy is not just about clean scans, but how it meant I still have time on this wonderful planet, to enjoy the wonder of creation, nature, of love. Opening my eyes in the morning and not being immediately attacked by utter panic is bliss!

FABIANA PAPASTEFANI, TIRANA, ALBANIA

Simply holding my daughter’s hand is my precious moment of joy. Today was my birthday, as I walked in the sunshine with my daughter, she reached out and held my hand – suddenly my mind went back 10 or so years to holding the little girl whose tiny hand could just grab a finger. We talked about it, she could remember that too. She is now a beautiful, confident teenager – pure joy!

ZUG, SWITZERLAND

My moments of joy are when I can sit and reflect on my day under the stars and looking at the moon. There is just something so beautiful about looking at the night sky and thanking the universe for all the blessings in my life.

ROLA ANNAN, QATAR

After many years of self-reflection and restlessness, I remember the exact moment when I was actually able to sit with my thoughts in peace, with calmness and just “be” on the land. I still go there when I feel the need to ground and realign myself.

CHRIS, ST. MARSEILLE, CANADA

JOY for me is seeing my neighbour’s goats coming out to the field to eat after the long winter inside. They run about, they jump, they butt heads and bleat as if to say ‘thank you’ for the freedom that Spring brings them and the luscious grass to eat.

ANDREA STANBERG, DORDOGNE, FRANCE

Being able to train with my son in the gym, lifting weights, after his shoulder operation. The road to recovery did really start with him! I am so grateful that I am part of his path.

RIES, THE NETHERLANDS

Just yesterday, I was walking home from some shopping with my 9-year-old son. We were laughing and playing, and as always, I had my arm around him. Then, to my surprise and absolute joy, he reached up and wrapped his little arm around my waist for the first time ever, from what I can recall. It felt like that kind of joyful weirdness. We kept chatting as we walked, but that moment stayed with me.
He’s growing—and I get to watch it all from the front row. So beautiful!

BIANCA PALUMBO, SANTIAGO, CHILE

I find joy in small things around me. Just yesterday, I witnessed Hail and heavy rains while on the school campus and amidst all the dust and pollution around, the air and the surrounding scenes looked so clean and scenic.

SHARMISTHA, CYPRUS

It’s my Saturday walk with my dog up in Raten, Alosen. It’s a beautiful day. He’s rolling around in the grass, literally smiling. Our view is an amphitheatre of snow-capped mountains as far as the eye can see – stunning. I close my eyes and turn my face to the sun, greeting the maunga. Maunga (mountains) are sacred, living ancestors that carry the life force (mauri) connecting people to the land. I feel at peace.

MEL, SWITZERLAND

I live on an island called Lamma, near Hong Kong. My moment of joy today was appreciating this forest floor find. And sending this image to people whose vibrancy has touched my life, just like this flower.

ELIZABETH SOLOMON, HONG KONG

The pure joy, laughter, and screams of excitement from our babies when we walk in the door from work each day, and our almost 2 year old saying “I lub you”

LINDSAY POSILLICO, LIMA, PERU

Every morning when I drive to work, I pass a house where a cat is curled up on the windowsill. It is a simple joy to look for the cat each morning, peacefully sleeping.

Every time I look at our beautiful little daughter. An endless joy of a dimension I could have never possibly imagined.

LUKAS D., KUTA, BALI

I have moments of joy throughout my days. Today, I am so filled with gratitude to be celebrating my 79th birthday with the love of my life and heading out for a 5-day cruise with our daughter, her beautiful wife, their 13-year-old son, and my daughter-in-law’s parents and two of their children. Imagine, 9 of us, all healthy and happy. Yes. Every day I wake with joy and gratitude.

DENISE LARIVIERE, TAMPA, FLORIDA

Smelling the forest. Laughing at an old joke. Learning a word in a foreign language. Forgetting the time. Meeting old friends. Seeing a rainbow. Becoming a toothless dragon while playing with my daughter. The smell of my favourite dish, stepping into my mum’s kitchen. Goodnight kisses. Rediscovering a word from childhood. Singing loudly in the car. A small hand reaching for yours during a walk. Dancing in the kitchen. Waking up at 5 am, realising it’s Sunday, and going back to sleep. Coming home.

CHRISTA WUETHRICH, MALTA

Greeting our grown-and-flown daughter at the airport with a warm embrace. She unexpectedly joined us for a weekend visit filled with connecting, curiosity and cuddling! My heart is so full >3

ANDIE, GRAN CAYMAN

A recent moment of joy came during a quiet rehearsal, when a student paused after playing a phrase and simply smiled, no words, just a sense of recognition. It was not about perfection, but about connection. In that brief stillness, the music felt shared rather than performed, and it reminded me that meaning often arrives in the most unassuming moments.

VIVEK PAL, INDIA

It is pure poetry when, in the morning with a cup of coffee, I watch the little feathered friends squabbling in the tree outside the window. A pigeon lands at their feet and happily pecks at the leftover seeds from the dangling bird feeder. What a joy. The sun glints off its plumage and it glides silently away. The little sparrows chatter. Excited by how simple and harmonious sharing food can be, even for them.

URSULA KAPPELER, AEUGST AM ALBIS

Today was my birthday, and I slept in and was also grateful that I had made no plans. My beautiful, young adult daughter called to sing me ‘Happy Birthday’ as she always does, wherever we are. We ended up chatting for 2 hours with her applying for a job and asking me for tips, and me househunting online and getting tips on size and layout. My heart was overflowing with joy, and I was at a spiritual place where my gratitude and appreciation of what I have, which costs me nothing, was overflowing.

PROSERPINA DHLAMINI-FISHER, THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS

Spending a day in the snow with my granddaughter.

DIETER, DAVOS

It was my birthday recently, and I was feeling quite low on energy and overwhelmed with the day-to-day chores and school work; not really in a celebratory mood. However, my 11th-grade students had other plans in mind. They surprised me with baked goods, party hats, birthday wishes, hilarious History memes, and truly made me feel special, loved and cared for. Extremely grateful for them!

ALEXANDRA CARLIN, BUCHAREST, ROMANIA

It happened in the span of a single, unremarkable afternoon. I was at work, reading a story to a circle of little children, when a little boy leaned his head against my arm, trusting and safe. In that simple gesture, I saw my own children, my partner, my dearest friends—everyone who ever leaned on me, and everyone I’ve ever leaned on. That’s my moment of joy. It’s not a loud, celebratory fanfare, but the quiet, humbling realization that my life is built on these connections. As an educator, I help tiny humans take their first brave steps. As a mom, I am the home base for my own kids’ adventures. As a partner, I am part of a team navigating it all together. And as a friend, I’m a link in a chain of support that holds us all up.

JAI ROA, GUANGZHOU, CHINA

Yesterday the sun was shining, and there was a real sense of Spring while I was preparing and packing for another trip. Standing looking out at my little garden with daffodils, I felt joyful that the winter has passed and noticed that it felt like it had passed very quickly this year. I then realised that because of my work, I’m privileged to spend time in warmer climates during the darker UK months and it made me smile and made leaving home again that little bit easier!

SIAN, UK (currently BANGKOK)

A recent moment of joy was hearing my grandchildren laugh together—it reminded me how precious simple moments are. As a mom, daughter, and friend, I feel grateful for the love that surrounds me every day. It’s in these little connections, shared smiles, and meaningful conversations where I find the deepest happiness.

JULIE PISANO, NAPLES, FLORIDA

My joy is in the forward momentum—the belief that every small act of love and positivity creates a ripple. It’s in the laughter of a child, the knowing glance across a room with my partner, or a late-night text from a friend that simply says, “You’ve got this.” These moments remind me that we’re all just walking each other home, and that’s the most beautiful reason to keep moving forward.

JAI ROA, GUANGZHOU, CHINA

I wake each morning and go to sleep with gratitude, even on challenging days. There is quiet joy in raising my children in a safe country, having a home, food, and water, and being surrounded by loved ones. Watching my children grow with confidence and kindness, knowing they feel supported, brings me deep fulfilment, as does continuing to learn, grow, and find purpose in my work.

My Moment of Joy: Sharing cake and laughter while my loved ones sing “Happy Birthday “ and smile at me. This precious moment, held gently!

FRIDA DOCI, HANNOVER, GERMANY

Last week, seeing Brazilian and international high school students on a study trip enjoying and learning about sustainability at the fascinating natural beauty of Bonito, Brazil.
An honor to be part of it!

DEMIAN TOPEL, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL

After many years working in an independent international school, I’ve recently had the privilege of visiting three public IB schools in three different states. The joy comes from seeing the commitment of public educators, who give so much of themselves to provide the best possible experiences for their students, no matter what challenges they face or the pressures exerted by local and national agendas.

PAUL WOOD, LOS ANGELES

The glow of sunrise on a mountain face. The pop & clink as friends toast. My children’s warm hugs – more sacred as time flies by. Gooey, moist brownie. Warm arms in the night. Being there when friends need me most. The last report was written, checked and uploaded. Stepping off a plane & the warm gush of unfamiliar air. Bills paid & money left over. A firm handshake & genuine smile. Connecting through joy, and pain. Applause. Dancing ’til my feet go numb. The lamp clicks when the day is done.

SAMANTHA, SWITZERLAND

The ISZL students were very warm and welcoming during the SGIS conference. They also helped all of the conference participants. Their smiles and joy made the conference outstanding. Thank you!

MARC OTT, LEYSIN, SWITZERLAND

Seeing my girls (5 years old) hold hands while walking into school.

ELIZABETH SUTHERLAND, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL

In an increasingly chaotic world, some order and aesthetic relief create a moment of calm and joy. Like the inside of a beautiful old tea shop in Geneva, Switzerland.

SHIREEN ALI-KHAN, GENEVA, SWITZERLAND

A recent moment of joy was last night while I was having dinner at a restaurant in Zürich. A small child, who didn’t want to go home yet, suddenly came and hid under my table to escape his mother and begged me to shut up. It was completely unexpected and made me laugh for around 5 to 10 minutes.
Thank you for the invitation to reflect on these moments.

GIOVANNA, ZÜRICH

I work with the local bird group in my village of Wasen, and we make nests. Recently, we cleaned nests for returning birds. Over the weekend, during an intense snowstorm, nest 22 in the church tower across the street from my house, received the first returning Swift. Knowing that this little migrator made it to a safe, clean nest gave me a moment of joy that keeps replaying itself. In the midst of a storm she found refuge thanks to a community of people that care about her migration.

ZOE MOORE, ZURICH

Recently learning that my son – who has wanted to be a doctor since he was very young – has secured offers to study medicine at two top medical schools in the UK, and has achieved straight 7s (in the IB system) in his mock exams, has brought me great joy, especially since he has worked very hard to achieve these results.

MICHAEL, SWITZERLAND

I joined a youth forum at the SGIS conference on AI tools. The students delivered the workshop brilliantly and showed exactly the kind of balanced and critical perspective on AI that gives me hope in our future. When so much of my LinkedIn is filled with reporting on the risks of AI-driven cognitive decline, to see students that both saw the potential of AI and were taking it upon themselves to be critical and self-aware, gave me one of those moments of real hope that feels joyful.

MATT HAYES

My moment of joy today is realizing how fortunate I am to still have my parents with me in their nineties. Their presence is a daily reminder of the love, resilience, and wisdom that shaped my life. I’m also grateful for friends from childhood who are still part of my story. Decades later, we can laugh about the same memories and pick up right where we left off. Time passes, but some connections remain beautifully unchanged.

RENAUD M., MONTREUX

Today I turned 80 and celebrated with my whole family: husband, children, and grandchildren. It was joyful and unforgettable.

MILVIA ALBUQUERQUE, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL

Recently, a former student wrote to me after graduating as an engineer in Chicago: “Thank you for always believing in me. Your support, guidance, and confidence were essential for me being here now.” Moments like this remind me how powerful education can be. We help shape lives and futures. My heart was full of joy.

FRANCISCO SOTO, SWITZERLAND

The moment of joy I noticed during SGIS 2026 was when we gathered together for the Community Choir session. After several intense sessions about what great teachers are supposed to be, the future of education, kind data, etc., I felt mentally full. In the choir, I was simply there to feel joy. There were no expectations — just voices coming together. I am truly glad I joined, and I’m grateful to Maria Le Guen for leading and guiding us in such a warm and joyful way while we made music together.

ISIL ALTIN DURAN, SWITZERLAND

The young ISZL students greeting conference participants in costume and singing brought me joy. Thank you!

KELLIE MCGILL, VILLARS SUR OLLON, SWITZERLAND

A moment of joy I noticed recently was when I felt the warmth of sun on my face while sipping a drink. It was a perfect sunny day on a mountain covered with snow, I felt alive soaking in the warmth of sun and appreciating the beauty around me.

POOJA AGARWAL, SWITZERLAND

A moment of joy for me today was reading the reflections shared here. As I read each message, I felt a quiet connection with the person behind it, almost sensing the joy in their moment. It reminded me that when we pause and truly listen to one another, we can feel the connection that exists between us and meet each other with compassion and love.

RACHEL, SWITZERLAND

A small moment of joy while cooking dinner for my family. My 13-year-old son came into the kitchen, suddenly towering over me after his recent growth spurt. He wrapped his arms around me in a hug and said, “Mama, I love you.” In that simple moment, I felt such deep love and joy, and an overwhelming sense of pride in the young man he is becoming.

SABRINA BENNETT, LEIPZIG, GERMANY

During the recent crisis in the UAE, many people felt anxious as news from Dubai and Abu Dhabi showed uncertainty and concern. But outside my home in Al Ain, the streets were calm, children were playing, and neighbors were smiling. Living a little farther from the busy cities made me realize how fortunate I am.
I felt grateful to the Government of the United Arab Emirates for protecting its people. That peaceful evening became my moment of joy.

BENNY DE LA CRUZ

I wake up to see the sun rise in Zambia every morning – this is beyond joyous, as my husband and I then walk with our Indian street dog, greeting early local risers. An hour or so later a group of us stand at the front of school every morning (often dressed up for one occasion or another) and are all truly grateful for the lives we lead and the impact we make. Pure joy!

OLI, LUSAKA, ZAMBIA

Sitting on my back porch with my cat at my feet. The Florida sunset to my right over the waterway behind my place. It’s a moment of serenity. It reminds me that as long as that sun keeps rising and falling, there is another day to cherish.

ROB FURMAN, WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA

Looking up and seeing the light from the sun as a beacon that no matter how dark it gets, each day, the sun is shining somewhere, and taking a moment to be grateful for every bright spot with the ones we love.

JI HAN, SWITZERLAND

My moment of joy was picking up my daughter at the airport, who had flown from South Sudan via Turkey by a more westerly route, and hugging both my daughters on my birthday. My oldest will return this Sunday to Juba to continue overseeing humanitarian aid in that difficult area, and my younger daughter has moved back home to embark on a Master’s in English Linguistics at UZH with the goal of becoming a teacher. Both girls are dear to my heart, and it is a joy to see them embracing their paths with confidence, determination under stress, and an abiding compassion for all mankind.

CHARLA HOFSTETTER, SWITZERLAND

My moment of joy came with a sunset after closing a four-year project. It had been a constant struggle and long days at work. At the end of the day, I found myself alone in the parking lot and saw an amazing sunset. It filled me with a sense of joy and accomplishment. It felt like something beyond my understanding was telling me all the hard times are gone and now was time to take a break.

JONATHAN PALLARES, MEXICO

Spending time with my grandchildren bring me such happiness and accomplishment!!! I loved being a mother, however, being a grandmother who does not have the burden of parenthood, and having the experience of having been a parent brings a complete sense of joy!

ROSA GRUPPO, USA

My moment of joy is connected with young athletes and helping them strive for their dreams in sports. Another moment is seeing transformations in the young adults I get to work with. Joy basically for me is helping people find a better version of themselves, traveling and learning new cultures.

ERIC BELL, TAMPA, FLORIDA

I had the privilege of snorkeling in Cozumel to celebrate my birthday recently. I was so overjoyed to see the coral reef and a school of sergeant majors glistening under the sunlight underwater. It felt like a dream. They flashed me with the reflection of the sunlight and weren’t at all scared of me. Instead, they chose to swim near me and were there for a good amount of time. I will always remember this feeling and this moment.

JOSE DANIEL ARANA LEY, COZUMEL, MEXICO

A simple gesture that warmed my heart today was receiving a hug and a birthday kiss from my daughters very early in the morning, while we were still in bed. The care they showed by setting their alarm to ring so early revealed the love and affection they feel for me. The gift they gave me was the most important their presence. That is priceless. 💛

LEILA MAIA, BRASILIA, BRAZIL

A moment of joy I experienced today is somewhat connected to the idea of legacy. It was both joyful and reflective, even though it came with a very sad moment. This morning I received the news that my favourite primary school teacher had passed away. It made me reflect deeply on the fragility of life. At the same time, the sadness I felt was also a sign of her legacy and the impact she had on me – her values, her work ethic, and the way she shaped those around her. It was a powerful reminder that even in painful moments, something meaningful can emerge: the realisation that we truly do have an impact through the things we do and the way we treat others. It was indeed not a happy or celebratory joy, but a deep, reflective joy connected to meaning.

ANA PULGARÍN-ROCES, GENEVA, SWITZERLAND

I had a nice one today…one son was in Austria, another was in Hanoi, I am currently in Bangkok, and my wife was working in Frankfurt, and we had a conference call where the three of them sang happy birthday to me! Special moment of joy!

TIM KELLEY, GERMANY

This project reminded me of The Book of Joy, a dialogue between the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu. They describe eight pillars of joy: four qualities of the mind – perspective, humility, humour, and acceptance, and four qualities of the heart – forgiveness, gratitude, compassion, and generosity. I would say the ISZL community has a great deal of heart, and as we nurture the qualities of the mind in different ways, we strengthen the bond between heart and mind. They cannot exist alone.

CHARLA HOFSTETTER, SWITZERLAND

Over the Christmas holidays, I was able to spend time with both of my adult daughters. It is true they will forever carry a part of my heart with them wherever they go….the moment was waking up from a nap to hear their laughter and to be invited into the story when I walked into the room. Pure Joy.

JENNIE, CALOUDRA, AUSTRALIA

After work, standing at the train station, and feeling my cheeks gently warmed by the last sun rays of the day. The days are getting longer; spring is approaching. Joy.

MOUSHUMI, LACHEN, SZ

Moments of joy? Every day, as I see my daughter growing, maturing and preparing to fly from the nest in a few months’ time! New chapters!

KIM KOVACEVIC, GENEVA, SWITZERLAND

My recent moment of joy was my birthday weekend. I’ve noticed that as we get older, people forget or even avoid celebrating themselves and those special moments, especially birthdays. There are many excuses for this, most of them revolving around the idea that we’re too old to celebrate. I love birthday celebrations, including my own. These are moments when one can stop, smell the flowers, and reflect on life, while thinking about the future. And let’s be honest: it is a privilege to celebrate another year of your life! Anyone experiencing it should feel blessed, thankful and embrace it to the fullest 🩵

JELENA LAKETIC, ZURICH, SWITZERLAND

Connecting with my son over new music he is listening to and realising that he gravitates to a lot of rock bands that we both learned about together a few months ago. Also learning about new artists that he and his friends listen to. Rock on!

MARIA CARRA, BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA

Sitting on the deck of the summer beach house in British Columbia, coffee in hand, watching the tide recede, and the bald eagles glide overhead. It’s that quiet moment when I close my eyes and feel the warmth of the sun’s rays wrapping around me. This is my happy place, my moment of joy.

ERIC, SWITZERLAND

My moment of joy was the arrival of my only grandson, who turns ten today. He was born extremely weak and premature, leaving all of us deeply worried. On his first birthday, I wrote a poem in his honour:

Mt.
You arrived so quickly
In an unexpected way
Even with no force
You made us pray
The force we supposed
That was not in your body
But with our eyes closed
We felt you were not shoddy
It was not so quick
But hour after hour
Even being slick
You showed us your power
Your power made us strong
Strong of tenderness
It did not take too long
To fill our hearts with happiness
Now you are so great
Much more than a son
Not too long to wait
My dear grandson

Being a Mom.
I have grown in leaps and done things I never imagined I would. It’s a journey I would love to re- take over and over.

RENA, KENYA

A grey sky couldn’t dim the magic: Pulled into the nursery lot on a breezy Saturday -strollers everywhere, families drifting in like it was the only place to be. Inside, the picture books came alive. Sheep and goats nudging tiny hands, my 2-year-old’s eyes wide as saucers. The animals he’s only ever pointed at on pages – suddenly real, warm, and hungry for treats. Spring in Québec.

RAPHAEL VEZINA AUDETTE, QUEBEC CITY

I am reading John Steinbeck’s East of Eden for the 2nd time. I’ve opened this year with focus on writings from the early half of the 20th century because these writers who understood that universality of the human condition is revealed, not argued — something I find missing in modern writing. Steinbeck’s ability to harness the English language to convey the multi-dimensional, existential layers of being human gives me joy. I understand more.

MICHELLE COLLIN, AMERICAN SCHOOL OF BARCELONA

While on a ‘once in a lifetime’ safari in Kenya, I was chaperoned back to my room in the deep darkness by a guard as we heard rustling in the dark. He turned a flashlight toward the sound and into view came the large back end of a hippo, plopping his big feet into the river, walking to the other bank. For about a minute, it was just the two of us and the hippo, swishing his ‘tush’ as he slowly moved on. A pure moment of joy as the two of us went off to our sleeping quarters for the evening.

JENNIFER ABRAMS, PALO ALTO, CA, USA

Accidently meeting a former patient while grocery shopping. Our paths converged for a short time eleven years ago while she was dealing with a cancer diagnosis, and I was grieving the passing of my father due to the same illness. There was joy in seeing how well she was doing and in the realisation of how irrevocably we’d touched each other’s lives.

NADINE, GOSSAU, SWITZERLAND

A few moments of joy. I recently moved back to the city, and I miss being outdoors with no sounds except what nature provides. So when I ski, I try to soak it all up and take it home with me. Next are moments with my 3-year-old granddaughter. I revel in her unabashed responses, laughter and joy at everything. How she stands up to call out ‘tadaa’, or ‘hello everybody’. Definitely makes my soul younger.

DARLENE BEAUDRY, SUDBURY, ONTARIO, CANADA

A moment of joy for me is a powder day in the Swiss Alps. After a night of snowfall, the mountains wake under a clear blue sky, covered in deep, untouched white. The first turns through fresh powder feel almost weightless. The skis float, soft clouds of snow rise in the sunlight, and the world becomes very quiet. For a while, nothing else matters. No noise, no pressure, no deadlines. Just the mountains, the light, and the simple rhythm of movement. This is my happy place.

WERNER DOMITTNER, LUCERNE, SWITZERLAND

My daily ritual of feeding the birds, squirrels, and chipmunks in my backyard fills me with joy. I’m convinced they know when to expect me, yet there is silence. Once indoors, I delight in their unique calls, which sound like messages of gratitude. Even though the natural landscape offers abundant food, feeding them brings me profound joy, a smile to my soul, and renews my sense of optimism and gratitude. Simple joy.

VICKI DENMARK, ATLANTA, GA, USA

Moment of Joy… of course, family-related. Over the weekend, both my kids came home to celebrate an early birthday. Elodie came from Manchester, and Louis from Milano. The 4 of us were reunited, and this has not been happening over the last 2 years. We went skiing on Saturday. The weather was great, the snow was perfect, a day filled with laughter and joy as a family. Quite a special day where life felt light.

ADELINE LORDET, ZUG, SWITZERLAND

A recent moment of joy for me has been being able to play football again and spend quality time with my children and family. These moments have brought me a lot of happiness and gratitude.

MARK OSBORN, TEXAS

A moment of flapping wings, white feathers, loud calls, all on a background of ice. Witnessing the migration of thousands of Snow Geese in Pennsylvania!

CHRISTY WANAMAKER, PA, USA

My niece recently had the lead role in her last university play, and she was exceptional. Watching her perform brings me joy, even when the storyline makes me sob – and in this case, I cried over a combination of the play itself and the joy of watching her shine. Her parents cried through the whole performance, too, as we watched her live her purpose, loudly and unapologetically.

JENNIFER D. KLEIN, DENVER, COLORADO, USA

After over 25 years in academia, my moment of joy is the decision to stay in this world and complete my doctoral research. Exploring topics that are even more relevant today than when I first began fills me with immense gratitude. It is a beautiful realization that after a quarter-century, the pursuit of knowledge still brings such profound happiness. I am thrilled to continue this journey and finish what I started with a renewed sense of purpose and joy.

During the SGIS Conference hosted by ISZL, a moment of joy I had was during the sessions which were inspirational reminders to centre each individual learner.

PHILIP ROBERTS, POINT EDWARD, ONTARIO

I have been an international teacher for nearly thirty years. Now retired, I celebrated my sixtieth birthday in our new home in Bali. Though far from many I love, I was deeply touched by messages from family and friends spanning every decade of my life. I can almost hear the soundtrack woven through those years and realize how much music brings me joy. I am learning mandolin and love singing with my husband and friends.

JEN, BALI, INDONESIA

My high school pen pal (yes, hand-written letters) travelled from San Diego to celebrate our birthdays that are a week apart. It was a joy having not seen him and his husband since before the pandemic to be able to dine out (without the kids) and the next night cook for them so we could enjoy family time. Sitting around with full bellies playing cards, tasting wines and laughing hard were moments of joyous memory-making that I’ll cherish until we get a chance to meet again!

ANGELINE AOW, BERLIN, GERMANY

CESS, PHILIPPINES

Enjoying the always limited but wonderful time with our two daughters when they visited us for Christmas and New Year. Family time gives me the most joy.

MICHAEL, SWITZERLAND

On Friday night, 12,500 of us recognised the same tune, though none of us had heard it before. RAYE sang a new song about sitting on the edge, a plainchant rising on brass. Even if you have never been there, you know someone who has. You could feel the shared recognition in our highest highs and lowest lows. It was not sad. It was pure joy of being there together.

EWAN MCINTOSH, EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND

My moment of joy till date are two things, one, seeing my daughters faces as soon as I am up, and second seeing my God’s in my temple. They are also when we sit together as family and talk… just talk..random things are shared. I am grateful for the fact that I have a family. My joy is knowing that they are with me as much as God being with me.

During my evening FaceTime call with my son, Bentley, our family dog, who is a wickedly smart standard poodle, decided to join the conversation by repeatedly booping the phone with his nose to get our attention and then “speaking” in a series of howls and whines. He insisted on being a part of the conversation, following along and responding at appropriate times, and my son and I had no choice but to joyfully oblige.

MERCEDES MASCHWITZ, BERLIN

A moment of joy I noticed last week was during our Amazon rainforest expedition in Ecuador with our Grade 12 seniors. Watching them mature in real time—showing patience and curiosity toward local communities, caring for one another, and listening deeply—felt like seeing the IB Learner Profile and our school’s M+V+V in action. I returned overjoyed and proud, as they stepped into their next chapter with such awareness and responsibility.

My moment of joy happens everyday at sunrise and at sunset. Every day I thank the Lord when I wake up, and when the day ends, for my health. God gave me a second chance to live after an emergency surgery ending with a colostomy bag and finally recovered completely.

One long time distant friend shared this with me Today on my birthday. This is a moment of joy as I haven’t seen him in such s long time… but his beautiful birthday message to me along with these posts gave me unexpected joy. Specially during these past hard days when I lost my precious lovely cat. To whoever created this… God bless you and bless my dear friend and his family for the small gift of this moment when I am really broken inside and filled with sadness. It created a moment of light…

A moment of joy I am enjoying: Delhi’s weather transition from winter to spring. Warm, sunny days, and flowers blooming.

SHABBI LUTHRA, NEW DELHI, INDIA

Leading our student assembly for the 100th day of school reminded me how powerful it is to pause and celebrate growth. Watching students beam with pride as their accomplishments were recognized was a moment of pure joy. Their confidence, curiosity, and energy filled the gymnasium and made the milestone feel even more meaningful. It’s incredible what can happen in just 100 days when a community believes in its learners. Moments like this reaffirm why our work matters.

SCOTT FREIBERGER, NEW YORK CITY

This last year, I moved to San Francisco, and I have been loving exploring the outdoors here. My favorite discovery has been trail running through the redwoods. I love the majesty of the trees and the sacredness of life here long before me. I feel close to God and eternity when running through those trails and witnessing those majestic trees.

AMANDA JACKSON, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA

A recent moment of joy for me was sitting at the table with my family after a long day, nothing extraordinary happening, just laughter over something small and silly. It struck me how often the richest moments aren’t the big milestones, but the ordinary, unfiltered ones we almost miss. That quiet awareness felt grounding and deeply joyful.

DEV EZEKIEL, MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA

My favourite moment of joy is when my son comes into our bedroom in the morning and curls into bed with us, giving me my morning kiss and cuddle.

DIANA, U.K.

One of my greatest joys is watching my daughter read and pray with my granddaughter each night before tucking her into bed. Seeing her pass down the same love, faith, and comfort that I once shared with her fills my heart in a way words can hardly express. It feels like witnessing a beautiful circle — love flowing from one generation to the next. It’s a quiet, precious reminder of how blessings grow when they are shared.

On the personal front, it was the birth of my first grandson! Although I could not be present, I was being updated, thanks to WhatsApp/Messenger throughout, and it brought emotions and joy that I have not experienced in years! On the professional front, it was satisfying to see my efforts of having my school become a part of the Technology Readiness Council – a feat I tried for many years with my previous schools, which opens the avenues of continued learning and innovation for my colleagues.

As I float down the river on a winter morning, I slow my breathing and embrace the cold water around me. Already a moment of joy… and then, perhaps because it was my birthday, the sun peeks out from behind the clouds, warming my face and my entire being. Bliss.

LEAH, ZURICH, SWITZERLAND

Two years ago, I lost my wife, Janette, to cancer. This weekend I celebrated my 60th birthday. Every big 0th birthday, since turning 30, Janette has insisted on doing a big celebration. This time, without her, a team from my current school took over this role, forming a “Bradley’s 60th Birthday Organising Committee”. The evening was so beautifully organised. I flew out my Mom, sisters, and niece from South Africa, as well as my son from Vancouver, to join. It truly filled my heart with joy.

BRADLEY ROBERTS, BASEL, SWITZERLAND

Learning that my wife and I will be Oma & Opa again. We were finishing up our Christmas morning routine when one of our twins and her boyfriend said they had a last-minute gift for us. She handed us a small box. We opened it to find a onesie with “Hi Oma & Opa. I can’t wait to meet you in June. Love, Thomas” written on it, along with a sonogram. Needless to say, we all cried many tears of happiness. It was especially poignant given that she had miscarried earlier in the year.

JEFFREY MILLER & TAYLOR FRAZIER, SEATTLE, WA, USA

During my 50th birthday celebration, I returned from the kitchen to the living room to find it filled with friends and family, all sitting and chatting, absorbed by the sheer pleasure of taking time to connect. I was still stunned. My eyes opened wider to take all of them in, and in doing so, my heart grew. And I said to them all: “Gracias (Thank You)”. I was filled with joy and an expansive sense of health and belonging.

ALMENDRA STAFFA-HEALEY, MADRID, SPAIN

A moment that brings me joy is the “aha” moment when an idea becomes reality, when it takes shape as a clear process, a meaningful system, or a shared direction, while ensuring that the way we work remains both effective and deeply human.

Recently, I stood at the back of a classroom watching a teacher confidently try a strategy we had practiced together in a coaching session. Students leaned in, talking with energy and respect, and the teacher caught my eye with a little smile that said, “It’s working.” In that moment, I felt great joy from witnessing educators and students growing together!

JONATHAN KELLY, MUMBAI, INDIA

My daily moment of joy is just greeting someone and getting them to smile. It is so important, especially during these times, to bring some kindness to others. Holding a door for someone or doing something nice for someone.

JERRY, SARASOTA, FLORIDA

Reading a very good book at a beach I love during my vacation.

MARA PACHECO BECKER, PORTO ALEGRE, BRAZIL

I experience joy every time my young son utters a new word, often completely out of the blue. Such moments brighten any day.

WILLIAM, SWITZERLAND

Just be with my loved ones including my own self.

A, SPAIN

Sitting by a quiet lake in Patagonia, surrounded by towering mountains, watching the sunlight ripple across the water, and listening to birds calling to each other. There’s a kind of peaceful magic in those moments—just being there, feeling the breeze, and letting the calmness of the lake and the grandeur of the mountains fill you up. It’s like time slows down, and for a little while, nothing else matters but that simple, serene connection with nature.

EDUARDO, ARGENTINA

I now have the opportunity to live the best day of my life every day, witnessing the miracle of my boys learning something new, using a new word, doing something new or better than the day before. I find my moments of joy when I see my boys. One of them is two years old, and the other one is five.

ALVARO VIDAL HERNANDEZ SANCHEZ, MEXICAN HIGHLIGHTS, ARANDAS, JALISCO

Moment of Joy – morning runs set me up for a joyful day ahead. Running has become like a meditation for me. It calms me down, and I get most of my creative ideas, solutions to life’s challenges, and peace when I run. I am really grateful for the ability, strength and fitness for running. It probably sounds weird that intense physical activity can bring about so much joy and happiness, but it has for me, where I can be myself.

EVARISTO

My moments of Joy are so many that it is my daily practice: Waking up early and doing my meditations and intention for the day; Before sleeping, reflecting in gratitude on all that I experienced; Feeding the birds (I have four bird feeders and one with a camera) and observing the different types of birds; Playing with my grandchildren: Uno, Sleeping Queens; Doing my  Body Awake Yoga; Learning from Dr. Sue Morter and the breath work of mindfulness; Following the Walk For Peace of the 24 monks and their dear companion dog, Aloka; My clients on Google Meet; Being of Service. Just being alive is such a privilege.  Finding purpose and understanding that Life happens for me.

SUSAN HULLEY, MARYLAND

In the moments of gratitude for the gift of life, I experience pure joy.
Where the joy is, there is the truth and behind the truth lies true personal success.

BERT MARTIN, FRANKFURT, GERMANY

The moment of joy: collaborating with my son to make a birthday video game for my husband and watching him get teary-eyed and proud as he raced his favorite vintage Benz. My son coded the game in Scratch, I designed the graphics, and I loved creating something together that brought so much happiness to someone we love.

ILARIA, TORONTO, CANADA

I suffer from imposter syndrome. Despite the accolades, or whatever people say in support of the work I do, I just don’t believe it – even when people say it directly to my face. So, a moment of joy recently occurred at the AAIE Leadership Conversation when I spoke at a meeting that initially scared me, and yet I held my own, believed in myself, and by the end (with no outside support from others) knew I was trying my hardest, and this was good enough. To me, that was a moment of joy.

JONAH ROSENFIELD, ANGOLA

Today, on my birthday, I received the visit of my favorite birds, right at the tree in front of my bedroom. Three bluejays, two red head woodpeckers, and a cardinal – at the same time. I stopped everything I was doind just to be grateful for such blessing.

LUCIANA HICKMAN, HOUSTON, TEXAS

Six actually! The announcements of pregnancy and births of SIX precious granddaughters over the last eleven years! Their presence brings purest joy for their mom, dad, uncles, and me, Gamma.❤️

CYNTHIA WOLTER (BATALLÉS), BUENOS AIRES & CALIFORNIA

The ping of my mobile, I look down to see that my son has sent a photo, the photo is a selfie of him, standing outside a very prestigious Swiss university, on his first day of attendance. The text was simple but unforgettable. ‘I made it, Dad.’ To a father who couldn’t read when he left school, this was one of the greatest joys life could present.

DANIEL, ZUG, SWITZERLAND

Every time I watch my boys playing and laughing together is a moment of joy for me.

BRIANNE, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL

Coming home after work and opening the door to my 8-year-old golden retriever, who is always happy to see me! It’s been 5 months of a peaceful new home after 5 years in an abusive relationship. I’m happy and grateful for my freedom!

CHRISTINE, SUDBURY, ONTARIO, CANADA

I stood in a room filled with more than a hundred souls, watching me, listening to my words, their hearts open and ready for transformation. That moment became a fragment of joy I will carry with me forever. Every step I have taken—changing my career, my country, my life—has been challenging, yet each one has shaped the path that led me here: to share my gift with the world. And what could be more beautiful than knowing that so many hearts are ready to receive it?

MARIA CAMPOS, SWITZERLAND

The view across fruit trees to the garden of an Italian guesthouse, listening to the sound of the rain!

ROBERT HORTEN, SCOTLAND, UK

My two-month-old granddaughter smiled at me!

D.J. CONDON, LUXEMBOURG

My almost 8-year-old son’s sense of humor has developed recently. He has finally understood the concept of a “dad joke.” Besides laughing at my jokes (I know I only have a few years where he will laugh instead of grimace!), he now shares his own silly pun jokes. There is nothing more joyful than being made to smile or laugh by my kids.

SEAN AREIAS, QATAR

A recent moment of joy came from a Brazilian leader who adopted two children last semester. After maternity leave and helping them learn English to join our school in São Paulo, she shared: ‘I’m amazed how quickly they’re changing — asking to come on Saturdays, to read books, and talking about class. None of this happened before. And the love from the community is beautiful.”

ANNE BALDISSERI, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL

I was on a trip with 4th graders from our junior choir. While we waited for the bus to take us to school for the day’s rehearsals, snow began to fall. The kids ran outside, dancing around and trying to catch snowflakes on their tongues. There was a lot of twirling around and laughter! pure joy.

KRISTEN MACCONNELL, BARCELONA, SPAIN

A new student at my school stopped outside and looked confused. I asked if he needed help, and he smiled and said, “I’m just soaking it all in.” It reminded me how lucky I am and how lucky he felt in that moment, simply to be where he was.

ALLIE, CIS – GRAND CAYMAN

The magic of the ongoing snowfall this winter season. Snow is covering the evergreens outside my kitchen window. Waking up and seeing the flakes falling in the light of the street lamp post in the faint light of dawn. White coverage of sparkling snow greeted me. The garage door opens. The sound of snow crunches as I walk on covered sidewalks. That sound of wisdom as snow falls at dusk, half silence/half snow whisper. Cat prints of snow exploration. Awe. Joy. Such joy!

MELISSA SCHAUB, ASW – WARSAW, POLAND

STEWART MOGGIE, CANADA

It is the first time we are spending a week in the mountains with some family. It really brings me a lot of joy seeing my son enjoy skiing and having such a good time with his cousin, whom he rarely sees.

Each morning. I wake up with an incredible joy every morning. I know I am loved. I am blessed. I am favoured. By God. This deep knowledge keeps me going. This joy gets manifested in the simplicity of my day. During my relationships with the people I work with, the students I teach, the community I serve.
This joy holds me when I am feeling low. Embraces me when I am feeling unloved and guides me when I am lost. Same joy expressed in many ways.
I have joy in my heart. This is enough.

NILDE, NETHERLANDS

We named our dog Joy so that no matter what is happening in the world around us, we will always be surrounded by joy: Joy on a walk, Joy at the beach, Joy watching TV…when people learn her name, they can’t help but smile!

KRISTEN

It is my first birthday with my baby boy, Leo. I’m so grateful I get to spend every day seeing him learn and grow. His smile and laughter bring me such joy!

MARIA CARTA, DENVER, COLORADO

I would like to share a simple moment that happened over fifteen years ago somewhere relatively far from Brazil, in France, where my uncle used to live. I went to visit him over my summer holidays, when it was winter in the northern hemisphere, and there was a leak in the roof of his garage, he had to fix. It was a rather cold afternoon, but still the sun was shining. I went with him, just to make him company while we was completing his task. I had mulled wine to keep me warm, and I remember laughing because he wore his two-year-old daughter’s scarf to keep warm. So I just sat on that roof and talked to him. I remember how, at that moment, I felt so lucky just to be there. This memory brings me immense joy because he passed away the following year, victim of a tragic accident, and I had had the chance to live that happy event with him.

LUCIA HUGUENEY, BRASILIA

Last December, my family reunited after several years apart. My nephews traveled from France and Costa Rica, my daughter came from North Carolina, and together with my mother and brother, we honored my father during the first anniversary Mass of his passing. Though we deeply felt his absence, celebrating Christmas together reminded me that joy is found in love, remembrance, and the gift of simply being together.

ADOLFO J. GONZALEZ, MANAGUA, NICARAGUA

Having sushi at night alone with my three children, a truly unique moment of happiness.

GUILHERME PEREIRA, BRASÍLIA

My moment of joy that I have recently noticed was a support group that I created last month called Sacred Circle of the Weavers of Light. This is a support group for artisanal and spiritual sharing among women and their children, who meet once a month to share special moments and wisdom that has been gradually fading with time. I tried to rescue the wisdom our grandparents used to share with us and pass them on to the future generations. Last month, my mom taught us how to crochet.

ANA PAULA, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL

A recent moment of joy: during a period of reflection, I found myself synthesizing years of leadership experience into a practical anthropological framework for schools—treating them as human systems shaped by culture, roles, rituals, and decision-making norms. The clarity it brought was energizing: a way to diagnose why schools struggle or thrive, and to design conditions that better align daily practice with stated values and goals.

CARLY MORRIS, UNITED STATES

One month ago. 5:30am. Wake up time. My wife brings me coffee in bed. A special treat. We sit there for 10 minutes in peace. Talking and relaxing. What a great way to start the day. We now begin every day that way. A peaceful 10 minute date every day as we prepare for the joys (and chaos) of our busy lives.

WILL, VIRGINIA, USA

January was such a busy month that it felt more about survival than joy – but of course now when I look back, the month, though hard work, went very well, on many levels and so for that – I am grateful, which is joyful in itself.

ROSEMARY TAYLOR, UNITED KINGDOM

As I sat looking at the window reflecting on where I currently stand in my journey I had a moment of joy when I realized something I had worked towards developing for over 10 years had finally come to fruition, developing a school that understood teenagers needs (social emotional, autonomy and agency at the forefront). I also wanted to be by nature and train in it. I live near a forest. I’ve created a peaceful home that overlooks mountains. I am blessed with two wonderful daughters.

ANDREA STADLER, GÜMLIGEN, BERN

Three weeks ago, my daughter, a first-year undergraduate student in the US and a third-generation immigrant-American who attended international schools her entire life, decided her first internship would be with a Refugee Support Agency. When I asked why she chose this internship, she said, “All the stories you told me about the hard work that grand-ma and grand-pa, all the stories of love and sacrifice of our family, I want to help those who are going through similar hardships now.”

IFTEKHAR SYED, AMERICAN EMBASSY SCHOOL, DELHI, INDIA

As part of coming to the conference, I had a moment of joy to bring together three individuals – including myself – that haven’t been together since my wedding more than 15 years ago. Coming to Toronto meant that I had dinner with my brother AND one of my closest and oldest friends at the same time. I often spend time with one but not both of these cherished individuals at the same time.

JONATHAN, OHIO, USA

Now that my kids are older I cherish the times that I get to spend with them. Recently I visited Brazil with my family and had the chance to swim in the ocean with my son. We caught waves together just as we had always done when he was a teenager. Pure joy in the warmth of the Atlantic.

JEFF LIPPMAN

In this very moment, I feel joy and thankfulness: I am on vacation this Monday, sitting on a sunny terrace in Bellevue, enjoying a coffee while others are working, and appreciating the ease of affording another coffee without a second thought.

MARIE-CHRISTINE, ZURICH

A surprise outing in NYC on my birthday. We went to the movies to watch a Brazilian movie and had dinner at an Italian restaurant that we love. It was very special!

KATE, NEW JERSEY

When my mother, who has late-stage dementia, exclaimed “This is the best ice cream ever!” on our weekly trip for a scoop…or two.

DOUG WALKER, NEW ORLEANS

As an amateur trumpet player, I’m was excited to join many talented local musicians alongside the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra (ICO) under the direction of Matthew Kraemer. It was an evening of shared music and community; joy. Most importantly, the joy was contagious as all of us – amateur and professional – could share in this learning experience.

GEOFF PEATE, INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA

My international flight arrived early. My bags were the first off the carousel. There was no traffic. The universe’s gift of time and alignment of stars meant I was able to join our aunt’s 80th birthday party in-person for tea and dessert!

AMY, TOKYO

I lead a group of leaders who are not only high-impact, integrity-driven leaders, but also wonderful human beings. I know this to be a constant truth and a blessing, but every now and then my family will overhear our Teams calls and comment on the degree of “wonderfulness” of our leadership team as we lead the accreditation of >730 international schools. Professional fulfilment at its best!

OLIVIA ROTH

I notice a moment of joy every morning when I wake up grateful for a new day, a quiet moment of clarity, and the opportunity to begin again.

LIGIA ALBERTO, NEW JERSEY

Two kids playing soccer with a ball made of paper and tape. Laughing and running on the streets of Mumbai.

Goal! And the sheer jubilation on my son’s face as all his friends and teammates shouted his name. He had been called up to the U16 first team at his handball club. He’s smaller and younger than the others and has been playing with the second team. In the final 10 minutes of the first half, he came on. First minute on and first touch of the ball, he scored. Just seeing him playing the sport he has loved since he was 5, surrounded by his friends, I felt such pure joy for him!

AUSTRIA

A small moment of joy found me in a taxi. The radio was low when a song I hadn’t heard in years came on. For a few minutes, I wasn’t in traffic anymore. I was somewhere else, in another chapter of my life. No sadness, no nostalgia spiral. Just a quiet reminder of who I was, and that he’s still in there somewhere. I arrived smiling, for no obvious reason at all.

SAMI, BANGKOK, THAILAND

Yesterday, I escaped my desk and sat under a tree in our school garden—one I had benches placed beneath years ago, hoping a little magic might happen there. Under it sat Kris, whom I remembered from primary school. Once struggling academically and socially, often in the VP’s office, he is now a proud Sixth Former. We chatted briefly before he headed to class. I returned to my desk smiling, reminded how deeply the work we do in schools truly matters.

ASABEA, GHANA

Spending precious moments with my children – going on walks, playing with toys, drawing together… their sweet voices and gentle souls bring me so much joy.

RACHEL BODILY, NETHERLANDS

I make each of my sons a handmade birthday card. What began as markers on construction paper has morphed into a search for handmade paper that can be used to create a card that reflects a particular year. My favorite part is the bittersweetness of writing a letter capturing the beauty of the year past and sharing wishes for the year. I just made cards for their 17th and 19th birthdays and found myself cherishing the opportunity to keep the tradition alive into their adulthood.

ULCCA, DURANGO, CO

A quiet moment of joy: time with an old friend, no plans, no need for conversation—just presence.

Anonymous

Any time I step through my front door and catch the warmth of my husband Kirk’s baking—cookies cooling on wire racks, gluten-free loaves still fragrant from the oven—I’m overtaken by joy and transported to a different time. Growing up, my mother’s kitchen held this same magic. It’s the sudden knowledge that someone loves me enough to make something with their hands just for me.

GITANE (G) REVEILLEAU, BUCHAREST, ROMANIA

The peace and quiet in the house when my children are asleep. Crystal ice-encased leaves after the ice storm.

TINA, GERMANY

I have a Bernese Mountain Dog, and every day I notice her joy and she brings a big smile to my face or a belly laugh. She is highly needy of attention and love, she is a finicky eater, and she doesn’t like to be alone. Most days she will take a piece of dog food from her bowl and drop it on the floor. She then proceeds to ‘hunt’ her food. Playfully pouncing and pawing at a piece of dog food. It is difficult to not pause what we are doing and beam huge smiles when this happens.

ALEXA SCHMID, NAIROBI, KENYA

During a recent visit to my mother-in-law’s house, we rediscovered a long-missing box of family photographs tucked high on a shelf. Inside were handwritten notes by my late father-in-law, along with family trees and documents dating back to the mid-nineteenth century. The three of us sat together, sharing stories, new discoveries and laughter. It was one of those rare afternoons that felt complete in the moment.

JESSICA PRIEBE, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

I was on an accreditation visiting team to a microschool that is learner-directed. They have plenty of structure, which allows the kids to exercise healthy freedom. And the absolute joy in learning–from both the kids and the adults–was palpable! The kids learned a second language through immersion by playing games and singing. The teachers were patient, attentive, and genuinely happy to be with the kids. You could not help but smile as the learning and growing took place before you.

CHRISTIAN TALBOT, PHILADELPHIA, PA, USA

Seeing my daughter smile and call me dad has been the greatest moment of joy for me.

DANTE, BOSTON

Rural country breakfast diner. This past Saturday morning. Sitting across from my 16-year-old daughter. Listening to her share stories and insights from so many diverse parts of her life. Realizing I need nothing else at this moment. Just to be in her presence. Just to know who she already is. Just to have a front row seat in her journey. Just to hold sacred the simplicity of right now.

CHRISTIAN LONG, GRANVILLE, OHIO, US

Every night, right before bed recently, my 8-year old son and I read our own books quietly for 20 -30 minutes, under the covers and with just reading lamps on. It’s been a powerful way to end the day. I love the sound of pages turning; our own quiet reactions to favorite lines and live for the occasional pause to share something that made us think, laugh, cry, or move. Bonding over books with my young reader at the end of the day – that’s high up there in moments of joy me.

PAULA PLAZA-PONTE, PITTSBURGH, PA

Meu momento de grande alegria foi quando, recentemente, meu pai, que fez tratamento para câncer, soube que se livrou da doença. Foi um momento de alegria, alívio e gratidão a Deus! :).

ELIANE MOURA, BRASÍLIA, BRAZIL

I recently had the gift of watching the sun set in the desert in Dubai with my daughter, Grace, and my son, Charlie. The beauty, serenity, and vastness of the desert and sky were not lost on us, and we simply hugged and watched in amazement as the sun went down. A miracle.

KARIM MEDICO, HAWLEY, PENNSYLVANIA

I’ve been doing a lot of work in the world of AI, particularly thinking about how it relates to students and their experiences in and out of the classroom. Recently, I was able to connect with a few of our students to talk about what their experiences with AI have been: what excites them, what concerns them, where they see promise, and what messages they have for teachers. Moments of joy emerged and re-emerged as students adeptly shared their experiences. What became evident was that these students were thinking deeply, interacting with technology purposefully.

DOUGLAS, USA

Went to “The Edge of the World” in the desert with our two sons on my recent birthday.
There was a cool breeze blowing around us. Watching the sunset with the Tuwaiq mountain range in the background was sheer joy.

HILDA, RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA

My happiness this morning was this: my traumatized cat from Málaga did not bite when I reached for her. Her two blue moons rose beside me, a little more trusting than yesterday. This quiet negotiation with old pain fills me with joy.

LEONIE GANTENBEIN, SWITZERLAND

Joyfulness happens in every moment of being. I live in constant awareness, and joy flows. I had to learn this- but once I did, it continues to be magical

MEERA GANDHI, NEW YORK

I enjoyed the look on the face of one of our visitors to Denver. We took her to a newly refurbished Casa Bonita. It’s such a silly and childish spot, delighted to engage in the whimsy.

RICHARD, DENVER, CO., USA

I walked the dog in the middle of a weekday in between virtual calls with interesting people who also care about education. The joyful feeling was of strange gratitude for past-me, an awareness that I was on this walk because of every internal redirection, each external yes/no, the long pauses in doubt, and the quick leaps into the delusional. Each moment had adjusted my trajectory, so that I was standing here, with a scoop bag. And I thought, so if this is what happens when I feel like “I’m still figuring it all out”, then maybe I’ll let go of the “how” and enjoy the path.

CHRISTINA KOTTMANN, RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL

I just had a beautiful dinner with my wife to celebrate our 10th anniversary, and I noticed how much we keep growing together. We also have a routine where we go out for at least a 30-minute walk each night around Budapest. 🙂

COREY TOPF, BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

Having just returned from the incredible Maldives spending time with my sister, there were many moments of joy. Travel is joy to me. But now I’m home with my 15+ year old rescue dog from Brasilia. Every lick, every snuggle, every greeting when I return home is a moment of joy and gratitude for having him in my life.

SUE, CANADA

With the Winter storm in the NE of the US, I found joy in the slowing down of everyone and everything and delighted in conversation, warm tea, and just being.

KRISTI WILLIAMS, US/KENYA

Driving down a dirt road in the Chaco with my family in my long-sought dream vehicle – a late 90s Land Cruiser with a turbodiesel and a stick shift – never sold with a diesel in the USA, but the perfect ride for us in Paraguay. Windows down, decent weather (a rare treat), and one of my young children asking me why I’m driving “her” truck while we laugh and gently tease each other.

BEN PLOEGER, ASUNCIÓN, PARAGUAY

I recently went to the airport frustrated. My suitcases had not arrived after our winter holiday trip, and after finally locating them, I had them flown to my home city to retrieve them. While feeling the weight of wasted time, I heard a mother crying in the arrival hall as she embraced her children after years apart. Tears of joy. Strangers paused, watched, and smiled. For a brief moment, their reunion became shared joy. I arrived carrying frustration and left carrying joy for them, and a quiet reminder that what matters most had already arrived with me.

SONIA BUSTAMANTE, MARACAIBO, VENEZUELA

It’s easy to take so many things for granted. Recently, my greatest joy was being able to spend time with one of my siblings, who is very ill, after more than two years apart.

TONI, USA

Recently, I settled in to a long road trip. I had a hot drink in reach. My family was close by doing their own things. I was listening to good music. Traffic was light. And I had time to think.

BEN THRASH, WASHINGTON, DC

Watching my kids play sports has been such a joy. To see my daughter hit a basket or my son dig into a great slide tackle it makes my heart happy to see them live the joy of sport and team.

MIKE JOHNSTON, SINGAPORE

A morning run at the beach, followed by swimming in the ocean with my daughters, and some proper Aussie coffee to start the day, is pure bliss.

ANGELA MEIKLE, SINGAPORE

A neighbour’s child playing in her garden with imaginary friends and stuffed animals, picking imaginary flowers and imaginary vegetables for her upcoming “feast” she was making for mom and dad on a cold winter day. Joy in the simple.

JON, LUXEMBOURG

I stood outside our villa in Bali to watch and listen to the rain pour one night, while my children were safe and sound asleep in their rooms. I felt joy and gratitude.

CATHERYN, ULUWATU, BALI, INDONESIA

My moment of joy is having family conversations with my adult children. Being so far away is challenging at times, but speaking to them regularly and knowing that they are thriving brings me joy.

HEATHER NARO, TORONTO, CANADA

The voices of children enjoying a full throated New England winter with snow, and snow days, to give them memories for a lifetime.

RICHARD ULFFERS, BOSTON

Being at the gate each morning is a reliable ‘joy injection’. Seeing our ES kids so eager to arrive, be in school, with friends and teachers, continually reassures me that AS Milan is a good place doing good things.

WAYNE RUTHERFORD, AMERICAN SCHOOL OF MILAN

Yesterday, I escaped my desk and sat under a tree in our school garden—one I had benches placed beneath years ago, hoping a little magic might happen there. Under it sat Kris, whom I remembered from primary school. Once struggling academically and socially, often in the VP’s office, he is now a proud Sixth Former. We chatted briefly before he headed to class. I returned to my desk smiling, reminded how deeply the work we do in schools truly matters.

MARY A, GHANA

My joy and appreciation for cozy time with my kids, as simple as curled up and watching a movie together

SHAHD

Students hang-out and study outside my office, and seniors have been getting into universities over the last two months, so there have been groups of students hugging each other, jumping up and down in huddles celebrating when they get into schools, regardless of if that school is a top choice for them. University admissions is so stressful, and my heart goes out to the students and parents who have to deal with the burden of such a selective system. It is nice to see that stress melt away for the students, even if it is for a short moment. Our students are such amazing people and whenever they win at something, I feel like we, as educators, win too.

CHRIS SCHUSTER, INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF BRUSSELS

Last week, I took off my shoes and jumped into a spontaneous game of foursquare with a group of Grade 4 students at recess. No plan, no prep – just laughter, quick moves, and being fully in the moment. They loved it. I loved it.

CATRIONA, HO CHI MINH CITY

Admiring simple things like nature surrounded by loved ones!

GUSTAVO SEVER, CARACAS, VENEZUELA

A couple of weeks ago I was walking through the middle school cafeteria. It was a day that I wore a black suit with a black button up shirt. As my colleagues say, my ‘Johnny Cash look.’ A grade 8 student approached me and said “Mr. Dave is everything okay?” I smiled and told her, “everything is great.” She again said, “no seriously, are you okay?” I again said “Joy (not kidding, that is her name, also my Mom’s maiden name), I am good, what’s up?” She then said, “well, Mr. Dave, in my culture, when we lose someone we love, we wear all black for a few days and I was worried you may have lost someone close to you. I just wanted you to know that I care and that as the school Director you may feel you have to be brave, but we are always here for you.” My smile turned to more of a quivering lip with a tear in my eye. An unsolicited, beautiful gesture from a 14 year old student. She does truly care and to me, that was a true moment of joy.

DAVE MCMASTER, AMERICAN SCHOOL OF BAHRAIN

The warm smiles on the faces of two colleagues when (with their permission) I announced they are expecting their first child.

LAURIE, CHINA

I live in Park City, Utah, home of the Sundance Film Festival. I have had the privilege of seeing several exceptional independent films in person this past week. Enjoying art in the company of people from all over the world has brought me many moments of joy.

KAREN NEITZEL, PARK CITY, UT

The gentle squeeze of my husband’s hand, letting me know he is there next to me. No words needed, but the feeling is everything. All at once, this brings me joy, calm, love, support, safety, peace.

DIANE JARAMILLO, CHENGDU, CHINA

A birthday, one my 95.5-year-old mother would describe as an off year, shared with 4 generations on a shelling trip aboard a catamaran. It dawned on me that this is gold. A core memory. The song playing in my head “we may never pass this way again”.

MINA MERKEL, KEEWAYDEN ISLAND

A team of colleagues who bring joy to work in the form of fun-loving shenanigans. Recently, they all came to work wearing pieces of clothing from my closet (which my husband had helped them access). Another day, we paraded down the hallway dressed as the many faces of another colleague, showing the many ways we appreciate her. And today, we celebrated a colleague’s 40th birthday with a personal rap song and dance, performed by one of our own. I was traveling for work, but it brought me such joy to see the team keep the shenanigans alive!

LEIGH MARTIN, SAUDI ARABIA

Watching the sun gently climb, branch by branch, through the woods blanketed with a foot of fresh snow.

JON NORDMEYER, VERMONT 🍁❄️

When my 7-month-old granddaughter smiles as I walk in the door, my heart overflows with joy. She is so alert and curious, and she loves to connect through snuggles, songs, and stories, and the way she sees the world is so beautiful. Everything is interesting and fascinating. Everything shines. She’s the epitome of joy.

LEEANNE LAVENDER

It’s been a long time since I have been at a school with a boarding program. The joy the boarding program has brought to my life and my role as Head of school has been immeasurable. In fact, a beautiful surprise.

I find myself drawn to our boarding residences and often stop in after dinner to check on the girls and hear about their day. It never feels like work. It feels like joy.

When the weather is warmer, there’s nothing I love more than getting a knock on the door after dinner to see if our dog is available for our boarding students to take on a walk. As a result, I often have a gaggle of boarding students tagging along on my evening dog walks, and jogs.

Our reporting students were the first to welcome me to my new school and continue to bolster me with a sense of joy and purpose. Grateful for them and of course, grateful for the joy our day students bring as well!

GRACE MCCALLUM, TORONTO, ONTARIO

My middle school son shared with me that he overheard a bunch of other middle school boys talking about how I’ve got ‘aura’ -which, apparently, is a high achievement for adults right now.

GIOIA (MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL), FRANKFURT, GERMANY

Last week, in a train station café, I overheard a woman and a waiter struggling to bridge a language gap so she could learn his name and leave him a positive review, and I quietly stepped in to translate. In that brief exchange, the shared relief and gratitude between all three of us created a moment of joy that stayed with me long after I walked away.

APRIL REMFREY, BÜLACH, SWITZERLAND

I’ve just finished building a kitchen for our 11 month old to play with tomorrow so I’m looking forward to seeing the joy on his face tomorrow morning!

MARK ORCHISON, LONDON, ENGLAND

While working with the Boys & Girls Club of Queens, two boys shared that they had arrived unsure how they could be of service or support to people experiencing homelessness, and left proud and eager to do more, reinforcing in me why this work matters.

NICK KATSORIS, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES

Last night I had an extended conversation with an owl in the nearby woods, by moonlight. Each response made me smile and filled my heart with joy.

JON NORDMEYER, NEWFANE, VERMONT

My moment of joy was today listening to the story of a teacher of a school I am working with as he explained his journey of learning he has ADHD. He focused on how it has benefited him to create, to think big, and to ultimately be the teacher he is today. I felt joy knowing that the kids that are in his orbit can see a bit of themselves in him, and see the beauty and strengths of the variance of our learning.

After our school’s power and heat were knocked out during sub freezing temps in a single week due to missiles and drones, and we had to shut down classes for a day, our team worked to do everything possible to get kids back on campus the following day. To see their faces as they were once again among their friends during a war. To see classes happening and teachers teaching. This brought me joy beyond anything I have ever felt as an educator.

TRAE, KIEV

MEG, BRISBANE

I recently finished “Theo of Golden” by Allen Levi. It was beautifully written, soul-inspiring and transformative. This book has impacted hearts – masterfully calling people (through this fictional story) to truly pause – to joyfully appreciate nature, to wonder deeply, and to appreciate art. Most importantly, it was an invitation to love others well and to radiate gratitude in life. It brought me great JOY!

MARIE, GEORGIA, USA

KATE LEWIS, HERE, THERE, AND EVERYWHERE

Reuniting with a dear friend in Luzern, giggling and laughing through the light-filled city, followed by a light show in a church where we lay down on the ground to get the best view, and were joined by all those who were previously standing.

GINA, MEXICO CITY

My wife and I paused the busy day to make hot chocolate. We brought our steaming mugs outside, as our dog had fun eating the snow, we watched in that state of silence that only snowfall can bring as the sun slowly started to come out from hiding and shine rays through our cedar hedge. Always stop and have a hot chocolate when you can.

TRICIA FRIEDMAN, OTTAWA, CANADA

My most recent moment of joy was watching my small dog grab the world’s largest stick and then prance through the snow with his newfound treasure.

LORI BOLL, OREGON, UNITED STATES

Our family recently returned to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for a visit. We had moved away a year and a half before, after living there for thirteen years. For our youngest son, Jeddah was his birthplace and the only home he had ever known. Watching him reunite with his childhood best friend and a former teacher, with whom he shared a deeply close bond, was everything.

ROSLYN DOTTERWEICH, ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA

We are currently in the middle of a snowstorm on the East Coast of the United States. As I look out at the white blanket that now covers everything, I feel a profound sense of release. In this brief, quiet window, there are no expectations to do—only the invitation to be.

It feels like a beautiful, necessary pause.

As a leader, I spend so much of my time thinking about growth, output, and the structures of sustained progress. But looking at this landscape, I am reminded of the wisdom in the cycles of nature: their inherent ability to retract their energy.

Nature does not apologize for its winter. It does not feel guilty for its stillness. It simply pulls its energy inward, if only for this season, to prepare for the architecture of what is to come. Today, I am grateful for the snow for giving me permission to do the same.

A child smiling while watching the birds flying in the sky. This smile was very communicative and contagious. The scene made me wonder about the child’s thoughts while watching the birds in the sky. Overall, it reminded me that the simplest moments can bring happiness.

Walking on a chilly Donegal beach with my two daughters (6 and 9), laughing and trying to avoid being caught by the incoming tide. Hot Chocolates and coffee in the car after to warm up!

RUAIRÍ, DERRY, NORTHERN IRELAND

My family started a tradition with good friends that we carry on every time we ski in Gudauri. At the end of the day, we take a lift to the top and sit at the cafe for warm drinks. After the lifts are shut down, we take a peaceful run, top to bottom, at sunset. This year, we had an especially glorious run under a rising full moon.

DEBBIE DOWNES, GUDAURI, GEORGIA (REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA)

Seeing my daughter take a small but meaningful step in understanding the language of gratitude through “please” and “thank you.”

YAMHIR SALAZAR, LUZERN

My moment of joy recently was a professional achievement when I was submitted an application for an IBDP Teacher role and it was approved as I had been trying for it for last five years. I look forward to continuing my IBDP Teacher experiences, thank you IBO.

PANKAJ MEHROTRA

Amid a very busy season, this Sunday offered me the space to pause, notice my breath, reconnect with my inner peace, and reflect on the privilege of living a life defined by choice and freedom.

KRISTINA LEBEDEVA (USUALLY IN GSTAAD), NOW IN CAMBRIDGE, UK

I just discovered a poem our daughter wrote about my sister’s home in Canada, which ends with:
“I felt so happy, cozy and joyful in Canada.
I love my aunt’s house.
It is part of me.” And then my sister’s response: “Well, that just made me smile from the heart.”

BARRY DEQUANNE, SWITZERLAND

I asked my 5-yo son if he would be okay getting ready for bed with grandma and falling asleep with her reading bedtime stories so that I could go and support Daddy’s tennis match. He looked at me with a focused face and says, “When you went the other night to [run errands] with Daddy, and grandma was here, did I shower?”
Me: “Yes.”
Son: “Did I brush my teeth and put on my PJs and read with grandma grandpa?”
Me: “Yes.”
Son: “Okay, so when you ask me if I can do that tonight, what do you think, Mama?”
Me: “Yes, of course you can.”
Son: “Yes, Mom, see? Easy. Of course I’m going to be okay.”

The sheer joy: this type of ‘logical thinking’ without giving answers right away is what my husband does with him all the time. And it was just too precious – a sheer moment of elation – when he made ME do the ‘thinking’… brought a huge smile to my face and heart!

After a hearty night of sleep, I sat on my balcony and watched the sun crest the eastern ridge, its light slowly unfurling across Medellín. The city emerged in soft layers—buildings, trees, streets—until the forested walls of the Aburrá Valley glowed awake. For a brief moment, everything felt aligned: body rested, breath steady, world opening.

DAVID LETIECQ, MEDELLÍN, COLOMBIA

Live music feeds my soul like nothing else! I recently had the pleasure of seeing the Lumineers not once but twice (Toronto & Melbourne). They are a band who gives everything they’ve got to their performances. There were so many moments of joy but it was a real privilege of seeing their interactions with one another. The way they smiled and gave heartfelt hugs at the end of the show was utterly joyful to witness.

GERRY, TORONTO, CANADA

The moment came during my recent Davos WEF visit, driven by genuine human connections with perfect strangers and meaningful conversations and reflections about life and work.

WOJTEK, ZURICH

As Head Coach, watching a handful of my Dominican Republic national team rugby players, who had never even left their barrio, experience being on a plane for the first time and bound for a new country – their expressions of awe, nervous smiles and giddy excitement were magical to behold.

COLIN BROWN, HONDURAS

A moment of joy I have noticed recently is how much I now long to be close to nature. In the past, I didn’t really appreciate it, but over time, something changed in me. I realised how often I want to slow down, breathe fresh air, touch trees, sit quietly with a cup of tea, and read a book in a peaceful place. These simple moments calm me and make me feel grounded. I have learned that even the smallest things can bring deep comfort and joy.
Spending time with my family is another true source of happiness in my life.

ULFANA ISMAYILLI, AZERBAIJAN

I once volunteered as a teacher at an NGO in Iran, helping working children get an education. One moment that always makes me smile is when a student, who had never thought about going to university, received a scholarship. I dedicated my time and energy, but I gained the joy of seeing a child’s dreams come true and was inspired by their determination and resilience. That experience taught me that, as a volunteer, you often get more than you give.

Playing DnD with some Middle Schoolers every Thursday. My moments of joy are being with my cat, Minou. I know it may sound like a silly thing to say, but she has been my constant companion since 2017. When I am having a hard time health-wise, She lies right beside me and when she looks at me and starts purring, I feel her immense love for me. When I feed her supper, she is so grateful. This brings me joy every day.

I was sitting on the top deck of the bus, front seat. The seat next to me was empty. This one guy comes up, looks at the empty seat, looks at me, and offers to shake my hand. NICK, ZURICH

My strength to build my own business after many months of looking for a job in Switzerland I live and people that support me on this journey.

EWELINA KAWCZYNSKA, BASED IN ZURICH, FROM POLAND

I cried. Not once, but twice. Heartfelt tears. The kind that just surge out, deep and unannounced. I felt so grateful, so happy, it almost hurt.

Behind me, the warm white sand and the quiet murmur of children’s laughter. I let myself float, and the calm, lulling waves held me gently, holding me like a mother cradles her babe. The sea was crystal clear, with shades of turquoise so dazzling.

Just a small cove in southern Sardinia. Nothing special, really. Just sand and water. And yet it felt magical.

In that moment, I let the drama and trauma of my life wash away. I felt that the universe had me. It was going to be okay. If I could just ‘be’ – if I could just trust and appreciate – it would all work out as it should.

SAMANTHA

A moment I found my inner strength. In the turmoil of emotions, I suddenly realized that the challenge given is not here to break me but to test my strength with a path to rise above it.

UNA, ZURICH

A moment of joy is shared with my son. He entered a contest at his school, creating a poster to advertise for an upcoming artistic show. He worked diligently all December holiday making sure each detail was as he wished and submitted it before the deadline upon the return to school. Two weeks later and the results were announced… My son came home that day exclaiming that his poster won and is The Poster for advertising the event. His joy brings me great joy. Proud Mama!

LAURA MCGAHEY, NYON, SWITZERLAND

Today is my birthday!!! A day before my birthday, my friend had a surprised visit at home. She brought a bag of freshly picked oranges, and made a fresh orange juice with lemon and peppermint for me. And what made it more wonderful was she then brought me to a cafe. In the cafe, she bought my favorite blueberry cheesecake and latte. I felt very happy and blessed of her thoughtfulness. It was an unforgettable moment for me!

My moment of joy is a daily moment of pride I have for my two beautiful daughters as they mature into young women. Every day brings challenges as well, but watching them grow and succeed independently is simply the most rewarding feeling as a father.

GINO BROSSEAU, OTTAWA, CANADA

Going to the sauna with my partner, both wearing out bathrobes with hoods, how we both mentioned that we felt like we were going to some secret seance in the forest centuries ago. It was the spontenaiety, the telepathic moment of being on the same wavelength.

I realize that I am blessed in this life. Waking up rested, feeling well, making a coffee and then sitting on the open-air deck of our Seaside condominium in Costa Rica. Listening to the birds quietly chirping in the background while reading one of my favourite books and enjoying the morning air gives me pause to smile and reflect on what a lucky fellow I really am. Married to a wonderful lady with two happy, healthy, successful children, what more can a man ask for?

At daybreak, when I leave the harbor and steer my boat onto the “Zugersee” to go fishing, I absorb the beauty of the early morning atmosphere around me. The lake is calm, and the energy of the water and the surrounding nature feels almost tangible. As the first rays of sunlight rise over the “Zugerberg”, they warm not only my body but also my heart. In these quiet moments, surrounded by light, water, and silence, I feel deeply connected to nature and profoundly grateful, every single time.

BJÖRN ENGELI, ZUG

Recently, I found joy in the simplicity of a few days off at the beach during the peak of the Brazilian summer. Instead of long trips or crowded airports, I spent quality time with loved ones close to home. It was a powerful reminder that peace is a big component of happiness, and that living a healthy, slow life—even for just a few days—is a real privilege.

The traveler in me will always say that my moments of joy are when I am standing in an unknown place, seeing new things, experiencing new food and languages, seeing parts of the world that are, as of yet, unknown to me – and being surrounded by good people. Those who want to help me. Who smile. Who willingly navigate the broken language yet try to communicate – and, again, help. Being in a new place always brings me back to the realization that the majority of the people are good. That minute of standing there, on my own, absorbing it all. With a warm smile – and many times with laughter thrown in because of miscommunication happening. But what fun. What joy.

I spent my birthday with my daughters and even with my ex-wife, for whom I have great admiration and respect. My eldest daughter’s birthday is on the same day. Her mother and younger sister prepared a delicious Asian lunch, and later I went out with my youngest daughter to a New York-style pizzeria.

SERGIO, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL

A recent moment of joy for me was finding someone who truly understands me. We share very similar personalities and values, which makes spending time together feel easy and comfortable. Because we think and react in similar ways, our moments are filled with harmony, laughter, and genuine connection. Being understood without having to explain myself all the time has been incredibly refreshing and joyful.

Spending time with my Family over the holidays

Anonymous

It was a simple moment: an unexpected question, shared laughter, several attentive eyes at the same time. Nothing extraordinary, and yet, everything.
For an instant, the tiredness faded. There was no rush, no noise. Just the encounter: them learning, and me remembering why I chose to be there.
When the bell rang, joy was already gone.
But it left something clear:
there are some days when teaching is also a way of being happy.

PATRICIA ROCCHI, SAN ISIDRO, ARGENTINA

Moment of Joy
A pause between heartbeats,
where the world softens its edges
light landing just right on an ordinary day.
It’s laughter that surprises you,
warm tea in both hands,
a message you didn’t expect
but needed.
Nothing loud, nothing lasting forever
just enough to remind you
that joy doesn’t arrive all at once,
it visits.

This past weekend there was a reunion of my former counseling staff, many of whom retired long ago. It was a great get together sharing memories and catching up on our lives to date. Cherishing good friends, colleagues and great times shared.

MICHELLE RATH, VERMONT

A moment I noticed recently was the quiet transition of a person moving from frustration to “aha!” while solving a difficult problem at work. There is a specific rhythm to it: the messy initial thoughts, the trial and error, and then that sudden, clean spark of clarity where everything clicks. Being the “thought partner” in that process feels like watching a sunrise—it’s a moment where something new and bright is created out of nowhere.

Returning home after two years having the experience of living in two different cities, one at the beach and one at the country side. This made me see that my place is here and made me love even more my hometown. I am full of joy!

CIBELE BEATRIZ BORTOLATO, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL

At the end of the year, my wife and I took our 2 children to the countryside. We bought lettuce and cabbage seeds at a local store along with fishing rods. We came back to the house and made a small vegetable garden where a local farmer taught us how to work the land and plant the seeds correctly. To see my sons covered in mud and dust after our Planting Lesson and with a very big smile on their faces, gave me peace and happiness. Its these events that make me so sure of how important it is to be close to nature, on its very “roots”. In this digital world, we lack so much human and nature contact that when it happens, it’s overwhelmingly satisfying.

As an Italian-Brazilian style mother, a moment of joy was this recent New Year celebration, when I had my son, daughter, nephew, and their families together, enjoying special meals and desserts that I prepared for them – and, modestly, they were good…made of love!

ELOÍSA GALESSO, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL

Joy found me in the most unexpected way, in the tiny paws of a small artificial cat (looks real) and in the heart of my curious child. As soon as he saw it, his wide, sparkling eyes lit up, and he began to follow it with pure wonder and magic in every step. Even his little body seemed to glow with excitement. Watching that innocence dance so freely in him reminded me how beautiful the world becomes when seen through his eyes.
